Raccoon Pack Attack -- What Handgun?

last month i had a raccoon family take up in my barn. I think the 4 babies were botn here, cause i saw mommy raccoon a month earlier alone.
anyway, they had gotten into the feed and were all getting big FAST!
naield mommy with 9mm (emp that i was carrying), felt bad, for a time, but once i tried to relocate a pair 5 miles away. in 8 days they were back!
day after mom bought it, i found the 4 youngins swimming in the horses water tank. don't know if they went for a drink and fell in or what. grabbed 'em one at a time by the scruff of the neck and put 'em in a hav-a-heart cage and relocated them to a nice wooded area about 10 miles away. theyr'e cute when they're small.

here's the first one;

 Wow I think this could be one that the Anti-Judge guys wouldn't even disreguard. 00 or #4 shot would be good from five to eight feet away on a coon.:D

Those miniature cousins of bears do not seem that easy to kill quickly. I know they will soak up alot of .22's sometimes. One guy I know out in the country tried to shoot a coon with his 22 that was bothering his pets. It soaked them up and he finally gave up and let it have a barrel full from his pump gun. Then it ran down the tree and died shortly thereafter.

I don't claim to be any expert with 'coons, but every one I've ever shot in the head or chest with a .22 LR (usually from a pistol) fell over dead real quick.

CB shorts seem to be a little weak, but they'll work in a pinch (or trap).

For a pack of em, Id grab my gsg and two 15rd mags.

They are a PITA though, especially when they look all drugged up on rabies.

Maybe the ideal solution would be to single out the leader and try a non-threating, sit-down negotiation and offer cookies, nuts, and peeled bananas. If the raccoons are not in the mood to negotiate, offer to build them a condo, give them food stamps, unemployment compensation and welfare dollars and free veterinarian service. Give them and their children free schooling and teach them non-violent methods to co-exist with humans. If that doesn't work, take out whatever weapon you may have, and blast them into eternity.
ROFL.

what ever you can hit them with. literally. typically a 22 but ive used a nice solid wood club (didnt want to shoot next to the propane tank).

On a serious note, are raccoons noted for attacking in packs? I've never heard of such a thing. I know they can be vicious and inflict serious wounds if cornered, but in packs...?

Belt fed Glock 17? Just a thought.

If you give them the welfare condo and free health care option, just remember to let them develop nookleer bombs if they want. You never know what the neighbors will think if you go to hard on them.

On a serious note

Party pooper! :D

It's not something I stay awake worrying about, either. It is definitely not normal behavior. But in some areas of the country, particularly the southeast, studies have shown incidence of rabies approaching 50% in some populations, and there is significant concern (although not proven, to the best of my knowledge) that they may be capable of transmitting rabies for a very considerable length of time before neurologic symptoms are manifest. A 'coon kept as a pet tested positive for rabies even though it was the third generation in captivity with no known external exposure, so no one is sure just how long they can incubate the rabies virus or in what circumstances it progresses to brain damage that causes abnormal behavior. Best to watch them through a window.

I’ve trapped a lot of coons, and they are mean nasty little critters when they are trapped. First time, I made the mistake of placing the trap up against my shed. During the night, the coon ate all the sardines I left in the trap, and ripped the sardine can into little shreds, and all the shreds of the can had teeth holes in them, and he reached thru the trap, and tore a hole into the side of my shed.

Their teeth are sharp, and their claws are long and very sharp and strong, and they can grip hard onto objects just like we can with our hands, but they have claws instead of fingers. They all got free rides a good 15 miles into the woods, and released. Every single one of them ran like the wind and never once looked back.

For the most part, coons will stay clear of humans, but if you corner them, specially if they have babies and make them feel trapped, they will defend themselves, and you will be in a world of hurt. Walk away calmly to show them you are no threat, and you will probably be ok. As for coons traveling in packs... probably a rare occurrence.

They are tough little buggers, but a well placed bullet of almost any caliber should do the trick. Problem is, if you are being attacked, it’s already too late to take aim.

Hate to take any shooting fun away from folks but how about a spray can of Brake/Carb. Cleaner ..? I know for a fact that it works; much like pepper spay and later you can determine any additional attention. They don't like the contact, smell and sound.

I might add that we discovered this by accident while camping up at Gov. Dodge State park. However, I did know that it worked for cats and dogs. On the first evening, while sitting around the campfire, "They" started coming into camp and we were having a heck of a time with them. Did not want to wake the neighborhood so got my can of Brake/Carb. Cleaner and gave a shot in their direction. I don't even think I really hit any directly. After awhile, all I had to do was just make a littel spay sound and they backed off.

Be Safe !!!!

I'm a mechanic and I run from carb and brak cleaner in teh hands of an angry person... :D

It will dry out the eyes in about 1/4 of one millionth of a second and you won't be able to open then for about 3 minutes, and when you do it will hurt for another 10, and that's just a teency bit in the very corner of your eye... :o

I kill raccoons with my BB gun all the time. it's a little 800-880 FPS pump 1.77 cal and I only use bb's pellets are too inconsistent out of it.

Got 3 this year so far routing through my garbage can, average distance is about 8 feet. Shoot one in the head and the others run when he's flopping around dying...

You only get 5 chances but the first shot could kill one and the report would damage the ears of the rest severely. The muzzle flash would also intimidate the coons.

On a semi-related note, if you want to see a scary movie about what would happen if rabies was much faster-acting, check out the movie "Quarantine".
