Raccoon Pack Attack -- What Handgun?

I've seen a lot of bear gun and dog gun threads, but what handgun would you use to defend against violent raccoon attacks?

Raccoon Attacks?

It's true. Raccoons can and do attack in packs. Here, a gang of 5 raccoons badly mauled a 74-year old woman. http://www.wtsp.com/news/mostpop/story.aspx?storyid=114730&provider=top

It would seem revolvers might be out since there might not be enough bullets to take out a full pack of the masked maulers. For the same reason, my 1911s might be out as well. I'm thinking a hi-cap 9mm. Hollow points should do but will defer to those with actual 'coon hunting experience. What say you?

Doesn't matter.

If coons attack as a pack, you won't have time for more than a couple shots.

Also, I'd expect them to run the second the first report is heard.

A snub revolver would be good, so would a 1911 or an XDm with 20 rounds. Anything that goes bang and sends out enough lead to kill a 20 pound critter.

Yeah, the FN 5.7 with an extended 30 round magazine would work. So would the 33 round magazine in the Glock 17. Assuming you have time to keep shooting. I'd go down fighting. I've seen 6 milling around the backyard in the summer.

Those miniature cousins of bears do not seem that easy to kill quickly. I know they will soak up alot of .22's sometimes. One guy I know out in the country tried to shoot a coon with his 22 that was bothering his pets. It soaked them up and he finally gave up and let it have a barrel full from his pump gun. Then it ran down the tree and died shortly thereafter. But I have not feared being attacked by them. I swatted an aggresive acting growling coon at my front door in the face with a rolled up newspaper and that was enough to clear him out. Maybe get a cheap ninja type sword and carry that with you, it could be more effective than a .22 pistol if you are quick enough, once deployed there is no fear of running out of ammo or shooting yourself in the foot. Heavy suit of leather armor covered in chain mail ought to be sufficient to protect you if you have no sword handy. No good against packs of chimpunks, they just run up the pantleg and bite. I also regularly chase skunks away from my yard too. Unless you are right on top of them they would rather run than stand their ground. Get a brick and whack them upside the head with if you are a good pitcher.

Had one of the buggers climbing the front steps as I stood on my porch over the summer, during a black-out.

Didn't act anything but curious, but wild animals are wild. It was fascinated by me. I stomped my foot and it took off- like it's supposed to. 'Coons are cute but they are still wild

I have never quite understood the logic behind the Taurus Judge, but this might be one case where it may be a good choice using the shotgun shells. Might be able to take out two with one shot.

Nothing worse than an attack by a pack of angry raccoons. Maybe the ideal solution would be to single out the leader and try a non-threating, sit-down negotiation and offer cookies, nuts, and peeled bananas. If the raccoons are not in the mood to negotiate, offer to build them a condo, give them food stamps, unemployment compensation and welfare dollars and free veterinarian service. Give them and their children free schooling and teach them non-violent methods to co-exist with humans. If that doesn't work, take out whatever weapon you may have, and blast them into eternity.

I'm no expert but I would guess that being attacked by a band of raccoons would be only slightly more likely than to be attacked by a family of Martians. That said, raccoons are tough little suckers and out of the dozen or so I have shot, none died instantly. I've used everything from a .38 to a 12 gauge shotgun and only the shotgun got anywhere close to an instant stop. Use as much gun as possible.

Well, in spirit, any high capacity handgun you can handle should be good.

In reality, I want a semi auto 12 gauge with a whole bunch of buckshot.

My 2 cents...Coons and all.

A couple summers ago i was at my grandparent's farm in illinois and i was riding the golf cart around their large property. I stopped when i got to a wire fence across a path to let it down so i could drive over it, i stepped off the golf cart to step on the fence which moved some brush around a pile of scrap cars to the left of me, then i noticed something else moving out the corner of my eye where the wire moved. I looked over to see a wet looking raccoon climbing out of the brush and coming my way. I pulled out the only handgun i had on me in a shoulder holster, a Magnum Research Desert Eagle .50AE. I racked the slide back to chamber a 325 Gr. Speer Goldot hollow point. The raccoon however decided it had better things to do and scurried back off into the pile of scrap. I didnt have to shoot it and im glad but i'm sure the Desert Eagle would have done the job and then some, heh.
