Questions about small game rifle

I've hunted tree rats my whole life. I cannot ever recall shooting one over about 25 yds away - most were much closer.
 
My next range visit will be an indoor range to see where my point of impact is at 25 yards and closer so I will know where to aim for those closer shots. I am hoping to have my hunting license mid-january. I just need to take the 2nd and 3rd parts of the hunter education course first, then a friend is going to take me out on my first hunting trip soon after. :D I can't wait.
 
I hear stories all the time about Marlin 60's still running after 1000's of rounds but I've never seen one do it.

I was given a model 60 buy my dad and he had that darn thing since he was but just a wee one, and I'll tell you what I shoot that good ole rifle more than my 10/22, I have 5 .22's 2 single shots, a bolt, and the model 60 and the 10/22, outta all of them my favorite is my bolt but #2 is the model 60.
