Questions about an original Remington 1875 44-40

Howdy

Dunno if you fired the gun yet, but if it was mine I would only load it with Black Powder. Or a substitute. Your uncle may not want to mess with Black Powder, but does he want the gun to blow up? APP is a good substitute and does not require specially lubed bullets the way real Black Powder does.

Yes, loading 44-40 is a bit fussy, but I have loaded thousands of rounds, most of them with Black Powder. You just have to set your dies very carefully, and not bang the cases into the bottom of the die.

Another member of the choir. If your uncle doesn't want black powder, then he should shoot a different gun. Don't load this one with smokeless.

My uncle doesn't want black powder and I was thinking about that. I'll probably be using Trail Boss powder

And you certainly risk blowing it up in the process.
The difference between BP and smokeless in in the pressure curve, as well as the pressure. Even light smokeless loads are smokeless loads.
I shot some factory .44-40, and some light "equivalent" handloads through my 1st Gen Colt Frontier Six Shooter, but switched to BP, and very little shooting with that.

EDIT:

Y'all do know this is a 5 year old zombie right

An oldie but a goodie.
