Questions about 10mm round

I have a Delta Elite; and based on my experience with it, I have to agree with those that think the 1911 is not the best format for the 10mm. I would like to get something else someday.

The OP seems to have his mind made up, however. It happens.

The reason that so many of us have trouble giving up on the 10mm 1911 is that we think the 1911 is the best handling semi-auto, and 10mm is the best semi-auto cartridge ... hard not to want both simultaneously.

Not intending to open up a can of worms asking this and also not trying to sidetrack the post, as the OP was asking about the 1911 platform, but there's obviously happy Glock 20 owners. So what about the 10mm variants offered by Tanfoglio and Sarsilmaz?

I think some .45+p hardcast from buffalo bore should offer plenty of defense in the lower 48 from any 2-4 legged critter in a 1911 platform. Especially if its a double stack style 1911.

I have the Witness Poly full size in 10mm. A scant 500+ rounds through it with not one single hiccup. That includes Remington UMCs, Hornady 180 gr, Blazer something or others (I forget which), Underwood 155 gr.

I could only find about the half of that brass though, I think some of it may have escaped gravity...

I have a Dan Wesson CBOB in 10mm, and it is a pretty decent and enjoyable 1911.

Why do you need 10mm? What a useless cartridge.

Ermmmm....more to the point...why do we need idiots who make posts like this?
Zero class, zero evidence to support an idiotic position.

Excessive recoil out of a pistol, inferior ballistics from a carbine.

What's the point?

That's what's great about America, all you need is a desire
to own something. Not ballistics. or a specific point just
a desire.

I wont argue against those who condone 10mm for 4-legged creatures. That's understandable.

but for self defense against humans, 10mm has no where to go.

If you are a person who already has a 9mm, 40sw, or 45acp, you are doing yourself no favor by jumping to 10mm.............or 357sig, 400 cor-bon, 38 super, 45gap, or other boutique cartridge.

I have had a 10m for decades and they are great if you handload. You can have loads from light to heavy depending on what you want to do. If you are buying all ammo new, the higher power loads are mostly from boutique manufacturers and cost more. The 10mm is best in full size pistols that have some mass. I have a 1911 10mm that weighs about 2.5 lbs empty. One of my favorite loads is a 180 XTP @ 1252 fps. That makes about 627 ft/lbs of energy and generates about 9.4 ft/lbs of recoil. Compare that to a light weight 1.6 lb pistol in 40 S&W shooting a 180 @ 1000 fps making about 400 ft/lbs of energy but having about 10.2 ft/lbs of recoil. I just don't go light as a steel 1911 pistol can make over half again as much energy as a compact 40 and do it with less recoil. FWIW, my compact carry is a 9mm as you can't beat them for small size, good performance, and cheap ammo.

I'll admit to scratching my head over the statements that the 10mm is somehow a much better option for threats that are larger and tougher than humans.
I gave that answer because the QUESTION was "either/or"

I'd much prefer a 40 cal for the two-legged threats, and a 44 mag for dangerous animals, but that was not what was asked

How are you calculating "recoil"?

How are you calculating "recoil"?

If you do a search, you will see several different formulas for doing so. The one I currently use works best for me in that when comparing one firearm to another, my shoulder or hands agree. :D

I love mine too, but what is the 149 siblings thing about?

The first run of 150 Razorbacks were allocated to 1911Forum members who had input in the design and features, late 2002. I have #67. :D Of course there have been slight changes since the first run, but I still think the first run was the best set of features, and one I plan to pass on to one of my sons.
