question for you all on a hunting handgun

Ive taken whitetail with my ruger super blackhawk as well as my redhawk, both in .44 magnum. I enjoy the challenge of the stalk that handguns require...

Hunting handguns; calibers...

I'm not much into handgun hunting but I'd do more of it if I lived in PA.
There are many high quality DA & single action stainless revolvers to choose from. In general I'd buy a Ruger SuperRedhawk in .454 or .44magnum, a Kahr Arms/BFR in .45-70 or maybe .44magnum, a S&W 629 .44magnum or 657 .41Magnum, or a single action Freedom Arms .454 Casull revolver.
Some hunters say the .357magnum is okay for most whitetail deer but I'd get a larger DA/SA hunting revolver.
For a good shoulder rig check out Bianchi's highly rated HuSH model. www.Bianchi-intl.com
It was designed by handgun hunting expert/outdoor writer Dick Metcalf.

Deer with a hand gun

Hunters:
I've killed two deer with my 44 mag Raging Bull and those were both before I put a scope on it. The range was less than forty yards on both. I'm getting to where I can put all six shots in an eight inch circle at about 45 yards.

There is a scope mount for the Blackhawk. The one I saw clamped on the barrel and the rear sight was removed for the other end of it.
That Weaver mount was made also for the Redhawk, and is totally secure. Mine has been on my Redhawk for over 20 years and no adjustments were ever made since the final. Hundreds of heavy loads were fired through. I liked the fact that it positioned the scope farther back than Ruger dovetails, but disliked the fact that it eliminated the rear sight. 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.;)

Look at all of the calibers suitable for deer then pick the caliber that you can handle well. Any caliber over .44 is adequate. Either a single action or a double action will do. However, most double actons have a faster lock time than the single actionss.

I think it depends on how you want to hunt. If you really want to hunt with a handgun I'd look hard at one of the single shot pistols such as the Thompson Center and I'd seriously consider it in a rifle caliber. You limit your range a bit, but can do almost anything a rifleman can do, except at somewhat shorter ranges.

If you are willing to accept even shorter ranges the revolvers are a valid option. The 44 mag is a sensible choice, but for deer only a 357 mag is very capable at any range I'd be shooting a handgun at a deer. If you think there is ever a possibility of anything larger than deer, then I'd start at 41mag or 44 mag.
