Question for LEOs...

It's funny we were required to carry off duty but never had an off duty gun qualification and off duty we could carry anything from mouseguns to a 44Mag.

In my mis-spent youth the Border Patrol qualification course was 72 rounds.

Thirty rounds on a bullseye target at 25 yards. 10 slow fire, 10 timed fire and 10 rapid fire. Then forty-two rounds on a combat course adapted from the PPC course of fire. Started with six rounds at 7 yards and ended with 12 rounds at 50 yards.

We qualified once a quarter, four times a year.
That was some time ago, eh?

It's still 72 rounds and once a quarter, but most everything else has changed.

All targets are the TQ-15 style. All sequences start from the holster.

From my most recent card:

1.5 yard line, one hand, bent elbow shooting: 1rnd in 2 seconds, 2rnds in 2 seconds, 3rnds in 2 seconds.

3 yard line, two handed, reference the sights. 1, 2, 3 rnds, each in 3 seconds. Tactical reload.

7 yard line, two handed, using sights. The "high search" portion. 1 in 3 seconds, remain at high search. 1 rnd in 3 seconds from high search. Repeat with 2 rnds and 3 rnds, same time constraint. Tactical reload.

7 yard line, using sights. This is the "transition to one-handed shooting" portion. Draw and fire 2 rounds, two-handed, then transition to the right hand only and fire 1 additional round in a total time of 6 seconds, then remain at high search. Then fire 3 rounds, right hand only, from high search in 5 seconds. Repeat for left hand. Clear and holster a safe and empty weapon.

End of first half: 36 rnds for a possible total of 180pts.

15 yard line. 1 in 3 sec, 2 in 4 sec, 3 in 5 sec, 4 in 6 sec. Then fire 2 rounds, perform an emergency/tactical reload while moving into the kneeling position, then fire 2 additional rounds from the kneeling position in 12 sec total. Stay at high search. From high search in the kneeling position, fire 1 in 2 sec, 2 in 3 sec, and 3 in 4 sec. Magazine exchange.

25 yard line. Barricade shooting. From two paces away, move to right side barricade and fire 4rnds standing, then 4 kneeling in 30 seconds. Repeat for left side barricade.

Second half: 36 rnds, with a possible 180pts. 360pts total.

The 50yard was eliminated some time ago, but is reported to make a comeback before long. It's basically the same as the 25, but more time and 3 rnds instead of 4 for each position.

You qualify on every firearm that you intend to carry, every quarter: P2000, Remington 870, M4, and UMP40 (if you desire).

When I retired from the NYSP in '03 we qualified twice a year, 50 rds at 3,7,15, and 25 yards. In the revolver days we shot at 7,15,25 and 50 yards(barricade). The revolver was shot D/A at the closer ranges and you had the option of D/A or S/A at the 50. Usually you would fire off your duty ammo first as practice and then shoot 25 to 50 rounds after in some sort of so called tactical course. Shotgun qualification was 5 rds slug and 5 rds buck at 50,25 and 15yards. MY initial training with the SP was about 2000 rds of mixed .38 spl. and .357 magnum although the first day we shot .22lr revolvers

The PD I work part-time for now shoots once a year and the security company I work for qualifies once a year with an additional training/competition day.

My agency is sending me to FLETC for a Firearms Instructors course. We normally shoot at 3, 7, and 15 yards. At FLETC the course is fired from 1.5, 3, 7, 15, and 25 yards. We shoot 60 rounds on both courses.
