Question for Aimpoint Users.

like the few other posters here that have actually been in a combat situation will tell you. Under that stress your mind goes into automatic and few have the ability to keep the stress in check and to calmly go about turning things on and off. My guns are ready. theres a round up the pipe and the optics are allways on and my home defense guns have lights that have pressure switches right where i place my hand so that there about automatic too. Most guys that dont agree with this are guys that have never actually been in a situation like that. By the time you turn on your optic turn on your light chamber a round and flip a safety chances are your going to have a few holes in your body. Nothing wrong with an eotec. there a good quality sight and faster then about anything on target but i my gun wore one id be investing in lots of batterys so i could leave it on. Ive got a vortex strike fire and its a good unit too but it times off. I talked to vortex one day about it. I told them mines on a 22 lr ar because of it. If they made one that would stay on id be buying more of them as there a real good bang for the buck.

Mine stays on all the time. I have a spare battery stored on the weapon and 4-5 in the safe.

I also have iron sights as a backup. I have had to use them once when I was at a competition and when the buzzer went off i raised the rifle only to find the optic was still set for indoor use and I could not see it in the bright FL sunshine. I just used the irons until I got to a section of the stage that gave me a second to brush the rheostat up to high.

Even Aimpoint AB corporate says to leave it on!

I have two identical Aimpoint Micro R-1s and I leave them on. According to Aimpoint themselves, they are supposed to be / built to be / purchase to be left on

I am pretty sire there are a lot of models with the same battery life / performance , my Micros are supposed to get 5 years constant on on setting 8 of 12. Now let me say You can't use setting 12/12 even if yo wanted to , its a glowing sun ball of fire. Apparently it's for daytime military operation usage like hajji huntingvin then sandbox facing the sun , well vie never needed it. And frankly I usually leave mine on setting 7 ... And maybe will acjust to 8 when at the rangevusing them

Not that I can even think about affording Trijicon , but they're my dream optics and would use nothing but ACOGs and AccuPoints if I was rich. BUT best case the tritium works for 12 years , constantly getting a little dimmer and noticeably dimmer after a while. Then u need ts end it in for a fairly costly repair of the tritium vial pellets. According to Aimpoint corporate , while an ACOG should last Indefinitely given tritium replacement , Aimpoints will last as long as their gun lasts and out live the shooter

Big big big selling point in the Aimpoint vs EOTech debate. Yes there is no question EOTech has the better reticle - they have the best CQB reticle in the world IMHO. And also EOTech it. Home run with their newer smaller shaped sights , XPs I believe. However the absolute best an EOTech can do is lasf a month or two I believe - gettimg back to my earlier point, WORST CASE in Aimpoint is a year cOnstantly on bright as possible. So a solider could have one bttery last , at worst, his whole entire deployment on the brightest possible setting.

Again- I love Trijicon and also EOTech and hope to have several of eCh in my portfolio to select the proper weapon and proper optic for the proper "mission" come SHTF time like a golfer selects the proper club. It's just day yo day for my " every day carry " M4ish style carbine, I went Aimpoint Micro And the ONLY THING I would replace it with would be a 4x 32mm Trijicon ACOG dual illuminated BAC scope in green or maybe red reticle wit a 223 range finder , With a dual illuminated RMR for CQB on top. FOR FREE. but this is $2000 easy and. Can't see findin someone who likes me that much so , I'll stick to Aimpoint and my AR And M930SPX will have their Aimpoint red dots constantly on.
:D:cool::)

Don't bother. :D

I tried the TA33 (3x) with a Green Horshoe, it really doesn't work as well as I thought it would.

Actually, it kind of sucked.;)

The only thing that I have tried that I liked less was the TR24 with a Green triangle.

By the way. The "range finding" reticle is basically useless. I used it on my neighbor across the lake. To get it to work, you have to measure the width of the targets shoulders while standing and directly facing you. So you have to have them stand there long enough, without moving to work your way through the BDC tree until you find the "size that fits" and then you will "know the range". I couldn't do it and all he was doing was messing around in his garden. If he were actively trying to shoot me, it would be even more difficult.;)

It probably works really good on a Popup range where all the targets are stationary and facing you until you drop them. (Technically you can use a wheel of a car that is close by since a vehicle wheel is close to the same width as the average males shoulders, but what if there is no car next to them? Or in my case, the closest vehicle was a tractor.:o)

The 2nd problem with it is once you "know the range", unless you are shooting the correct round out of the correct barrel length with the correct mounting height for that particular model, your rounds will either be low or high and since most US civilian ARs are 16" bbls with flat top mounting, most of them won't be "right".

They do have phenomenal glass and are really nice in broad daylight. Not so good in the dark or behind a light.

A couple points I will make about Trijicon ACOGS and Eotechs. What a lot of people don't realize about the ACOGS is there is only one model that is calibrated for a 62gr bullet (M855) and its the TA01NSN shot out of a M4 14.5" barrel all the other ACOGS are calibrated for 55gr shot out of a M-16 20" Barrel. The reason I brought this up is because most people these days want to shoot 62gr or heavier.

Per Trijicon's FAQ page:
The TA01, TA11, & TA31 (.223) were designed for the 5.56mm, 20 inch barrel, 55 grain bullet, and M16/AR15 carry handle mount. The TA01B & TA11C(.308) were designed for the 7.62mm, 20 inch barrel, 168 grain bullet, and M16/AR15 carry handle mount. The TA01NSN was designed specifically for the US Special Operations Command SOPMOD M4 Carbine. To meet their requirements, the reticle bullet drop compensator and range finding stadia lines were based on the trajectory of the 62 grain bullet from a 14.5 inch barrel, flattop mount (Picatinny rail Mil.Std.1913).

I had the 4x32 TA01NSN and the optics were great it held zero and was built like a tank, I was also going to buy the RMR for it, but like I said in another post at the end of the day all you have is a very nice $1000.00 4x fixed power scope. At 150+yds I still found myself sometimes needing my 10x power binos to verify hits. For longer range targets anyone can do more with a 3-9 power scope. Luckily for me I was able to sell it on ebay for more than what I paid for it. So I took that money and bought the Aimpoint PRO and have no regrets. I don't care for the reticles on Eotechs I find them busy besides whats simpler than one red dot on a Aimpoint. For longer range I just put my 4-12 power scope on it. There is no free lunch for me I either set it up for CQB or long range.

Pretty close to my exact experience. Except I started with the Aimpoint M4, then went to the Trijicon TR24, then went to the Trijicon TA33, then back to the M4. Your way was much cheaper.;)
