question about the 22 lr

If i was you i'd wait for a day when there are no kids around, then use that .357 with some nice solids. Or something with more power than that. .22lr CAN work, but only under ideal conditions and even then you have to take into account that it will want to glance off the skull, so you want to be very much at a 90 degree angle. Perhaps you could trap some, and then you can easily walk up with a subsonic .22lr solid and it'll be quiet and allow you to get close/ideal shot. Though they are pests, do the humane thing and use a gun that gives you some leeway with shot placement IMO

If you use your 22 for pig hunting you will be dissapointed with the results. While a 22 will drop piglets successfully ,it takes a good marksman & a lot of luck to drop even medium sized pigs with a 22 at 50 yards when hunting.
If you have aggressive large boars in the area you will be hunting I would not recommend using a 22.
I have shot several hundred pigs in over 30 years of hunting & like most, started out hunting with a 22.
Having done most of my hunting over the last 25 years with centrefire rifles, a year ago I decided to buy a new 22 CZ & topped it off with a Leupold 2-7x32 scope-this rifle was going to be a keeper. I mainly bought this rifle for rabbits & foxes, but then set myself a challenge & decided to try & improve my stalking by trying to take goats & pigs.
While I have taken 4 feral goats & 2 small pigs(+ a dozen piglets), not to mention many rabbits & foxes with this new "toy", I realised the limitations of a 22 after an encounter with a mob of 15+ medium to large pigs. This brought back memories of why as a youngster I always wanted a more powerfull rifle than a 22.
Go use your 357 & have some fun outside of daycare hours.

Hit a hog between the eyes with a .22 short and he'll drop dead instantly.

That's a good way to get yourself hurt. A hogs forehead is hard. The soft spot is just behind the lower part of the ear.

If I'm going for a head shot, I try to put it just behind and a bit below the earhole. But it takes a good steady rest and the animal has to hold still as well. Once in awhile it comes up deer hunting when they are close. I'm not sure it would come up very often shooting at hogs. All things considered, you might be better off with a sledge hammer.

I think its kind of like asking if a .22lr is good for self defense... Not the ideal tool for the job, but better than throwing rocks and poking with sticks.

Really? I've personally killed dozens this way and been witness to over a hundred pigs killed with a shot between the eyes with a .22. I picture a line going from eye to eye and then move up about 1 inch. It has never failed me. The best thing you can do to eliminate pigs is get a trap. Either buy one, or find somebody who will lend you one. Bait it with corn, and you should start catching pigs soon. One year when we were leasing about 800 acres for deer hunting, we trapped and killed ~150 pigs. I have an uncle who processes meat, and it all went to good use.

Hunting from a tree stand over bait, Range 30 yards, perfect shot placement, 22lr would be OK.

Shooting across a field, Range over 30 yards to 100 yards, 30-30. Range over 100 yards, .308 or 06 would be better choice.

Walking them out of cane breaks in the dark, around creek bottoms, Range 10 feet, 00 buck 12 gauge, only way to go.

As my name implies, I prefer runnin' dogs on them... Traps may get a couple of the big brooder hogs early on but straight away, the bigguns will be too trap shy and all you get, for the most part, will be youngsters.

Dogs tend to get a gob of the bigger hogs. Many dogs seem to single out larger hogs no matter what is in the group... and if it will turn and fight, they love 'em all the more...

I've done that a few times too. I have an uncle who used to run dogs. I was 10-12 years old when he was still hog doggin' and went with him a few times. We always went at night and they would usually make us climb a tree if they thought the pig could cause a problem. Definitely the most exciting hunting I've done.

Under the circumstances, what about a 22WMR rifle? They are quite a bit more powerful than a 22LR, but you still want head shots unless you don't mind them running off and dying. I'm not a fan of that approach.

Centerfire is better of course, but a lot more noise as you know.

AS everyone else has said; a .22LR will work if you are a hell of a marksman or at a fairly short range. A .22 mag can improve on this a little. I've put down 2 with a .22 mag revolver, but, I didn't have a choice in caliber at the time. It was either that or the 20ga with 7 1/2 game loads I was carrying. I know these forums are dedicated to firearms, but, if you're trying to be quiet about it why not try a bow?
All that having been said, I hunt hogs with a .357 with a 6" barrel. If my old beat-up Taurus can take them down then I'm sure your lever action can do the job.

It works just make sure that you can put that LR pill where it needs to go.

125 lb. sow, 36 gr. federal bulk pack, 3 cell maglite and high end electrical tape, 30 yds. eyeball.

Of course I suppose low end electrical tape may work too.

If you're wanting to eliminate hogs from your mom's place, why not just build a pen type trap? A search on it should yield plenty of results on how to do it.

Once trapped, you can kill them pretty easily with a .22 LR. You also won't have to do it while there are kids in the daycare. Just wait 'till they leave.

Check your local laws, of course. Would seem to me that shooting near ANY daycare is going to be highly suspicious to some folks, and might actually be illegal.

That would be nice and quiet. : )

I killed domestic hogs with a 22 LR when I was a kid for the neighbors and ourselves. We would get together on a cold winter morning and kill six or eight at a time, throw them in the scalder, gut them, cut up the meat, render the lard, salt down the hams and shoulders, grind sausage, all that stuff.

You have a pretty small target. If you are off an inch one way or the other the bullet will glance off the skull.
