Question about .22 ammo

To state something obvious, I have never had any problems with CCI mini-mags. Yes, I know, they are quite some of the most expensive .22LR rounds you can buy. They don't come in 500 or 5000 round bricks; just 100 round handy plastic boxes. The CCIs, while expensive, just are better made. Give them a try. To reiterate, it us unfortunate that they are more expensive.

FWIW, the WallyWorld bulk Remington Golden Bullet .22lr ammo is my least favorite ammo. That you got that few issues means that you got a good lot of it. I've experienced much worse with that stuff. I've had multiple failures per mag in my S&W 422/tube in my Marlin 60 with that stuff. In many cases, the duds won't even fire if reloaded in the mag/tube, indicating defective priming.

If it is all I can get, and all I want to do with it is just plink or target practice, I can deal with that. Heck, it is pretty good stuff if you want to practice failure drills. But I won't consider it for more critical roles, like hunting.

If you are shopping at WallyWorld for your .22lr ammo: Federal bulk seems to be much better, Federal AutoMag is good stuff, and the Winchester 333 packs are also decent.

Cough, cough, cough. Nope. Not even close. You obviously haven't priced .22lr match ammo. Top quality .22lr match ammo's price tag will absolutely take your breath away! Just check out the top brands like Lapua, Eley, RWS and such.

For instance, check out the per box (that's 50 round box) of Eley Tenex.

Or this from RWS.

How about this offering from Lapua?

This is just from a quick search on Midway USA. Match ammo -- high dollar. You get what you pay for on the upper end. If you are a world class talent and have a world class rifle/pistol, you won't get world class performance without world class ammo. And you'll pay for it.

I'm inclined to think it is just the ammo at this point.

You're right on target.

Remington 22LR ammo is probably the world's worst. If you've been away from rimfire shooting for awhile, you're no doubt unaware. They've had serious ongoing QC problems that they simply haven't addressed. Anything else is better than Remington. Even my Remington 22 rifles hate Remington ammo.

Try CCI, Winchester Super-X, Federal, or Aguila. All of those are much better. There's probably not a thing wrong with your Mk III.

I never buy Remington rimfire unless I absolutely have too. The quality has never improved in over two decades as far as I can tell.

That aside, I was at Wallyworld last night and saw that they had 50ct boxes of Federal Lighting for $1.47. I picked up a brick right away. This stuff has always shot great in all my guns.

1) I have been shooting plain old green Remington (standard velocity, 40 grain lead) for decades. Only recently have I begun experiencing failures to fire. In every case, rotating the round in the chamber and hitting it again makes it go off. From this one concludes that manufacturing techniques have been "improved" to the point where centrifugal placement of the priming compound into the rim isn't what it once was.

2) For accuracy (we like to shoot ping-pong balls at 100 yards), the best I've found so far is Wolf "MT." Normally, I wouldn't buy anything made by Wolf, but it is reported that this stuff is actually made by SK in Germany. Expensive.

I agree with your green box Remington observation, RKG except that I haven't experienced any failures with it. On the other hand, I don't think I have any that was bought within the past 5 years. That type was about the only ammo available when I was young, and it never failed that I recall. I still use a lot of .22 shorts and buy it in the green box - it never fails to fire.

I think it must come from a different factory or they use a different process for priming the cases. The primer is by far the main problem with other Remington .22's. Remington could learn a thing or two about manufacturing .22's - from themselves!

The best .22 ammo you can shoot in your pistol, for just plinking around, is the cheapest you can find at the time. If you have a misfire or two, so what.

I have the same pistol you do and for serious shooting, I prefer the CCI or Remington HV stuff.

Just my 2 cents.......

I’m surprised to see anyone have good luck with Remington .22 ammo. Up to about 7 years ago, I used Remington .22 ammo exclusively. The failure to fire problem got so bad, I gave up on it and switched to CCI for serious work, Federal for plinking. It’s not like the problems with Remington was limited to one firearm. I have a total of 10 firearms chambered in .22 LR, and have problems with Remington in every one of them. My .22’s cover Ruger, Remington, Glenfield and Baikal. Pistols, revolvers and rifles. I can’t get any ammo that says Remington on it to work in any of my guns. It got so bad, I no longer will buy center fire ammo if it’s made by Remington, even though I’ve never had problems with Remington center fire, I have been soured by the rim fire. Maybe it’s just me and my “If it weren’t for bad luck I’d have no luck at all”?

I have good results with RGB in all of my rimfires, It functions my P22 perfectly, is the most accurate I have used in my Rough Rider, and has also shot well in my Buckmark. It shoots well in my rimfire rifles also.
I have some older Remington ammo that is not near as accurate as the bulk 550 RGB ammo from Wally World. It looks like Golden Bullet, but packaged the old way in a brick of 10, 50 round boxes. It's probably 10 or more years old. Maybe that is why it doesn't perform as well as fresh ammo.

I went and got the gun out of the 3 day timeout this morning. What a sweet shooter, I really enjoy this gun.

Stopped at WM and picked up some different ammo. I bought two boxes of CCI Mini Mag for $6.47/100 and a
box of Federal Auto Match for $14.47/325.
Both a little more than the Remington but still not too bad. They also had several others that were
mentioned but I thought I'd just try these for now. I shot 100 rounds of the CCI with no problems.
Certainly not conclusive, but it is encouraging. Haven't shot any of the Federal yet but I will very soon. :D

Thanks again for all the feedback and suggestions.

.22's all seem to have a preference when it comes to ammo. My Norinco loved Federal but hates winchester stuff..
