Quarter Bore Lovers

How many folks out there enjoy hunting and shooting quarter bore rifles? I've owned a Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 in 25-06 for some time now and really enjoy hunting and target shooting with it. I was going to get another Weatherby in .257 Magnum, but picked up a Savage 12 LRP in .260 Remington first. I have pipe dreams of bench rest shooting with it. It's a work in progress.

I still want the .257 Magnum though. A buddy of mine is trying to sell me on a .257 Roberts Ackley Improved, but the 25-06 is a better round IMHO and the .257 Weatherby would be a more rational step up. It might be cool to have a Roberts just because it's a quarter bore and I don't have one in the gun safe. We'll see.

Meanwhile the 25-06 is a fine representation of the quarter bore family and it has yet to let me down. in the field or off the bench. Anybody else out there that can't live without a quarter bore in the gun safe, or in the truck during hunting season?

I have a FN mauser in 25-06. My son loves it. Devastating on deer with a 117gn sierra gameking. Not much recoil.

I also love the 25-06. I have 2 one a custom mauser built with on a Czech action. And the other a savage 110 tactical with a heavy barrel. The savage is a tack driver with the sierra 117 gamekings. Shot a .57" group at 100yards with it a few weeks ago. One thing I have found is the 25-06 is a picky round with different bullets and powder charges. But for some reason I can get above reloading manual velocities without using max charges with it in both rifles. no problem getting 3250-3330 fps with the 115-117gr bullets.

I have to agree works very well.

I am building a 260 mauser should be shootable next week. I hope I like. I like the 6.5 bores as much as the quarter bores.

Around 3150 fps is the fastest load I can find for 25-06 and 115 gr bullets. If you're getting 3300 fps you are probably way over loaded.

Loading manuals list max powder charges which are just a guideline. The speed listed is at max pressure. When you reach the speed listed you are at a maximum safe load with that rifle/powder/brass/primer combo. That often happens well below the max powder charge suggested.

Currently making do with a 25-20, but I'm rebarreling a large ring Mauser to .257 Roberts. Got to fill that gap between 6 and 6.5 mm.

I have two quarter bores and my daughter has one. I have a custom built .25-06 with set triggers on a Zastava action with Lilja barrel. Then my daughter has a custom .250-3000 on a Charles Daly Mini Mauser and I have a home built .250-3000 on a Stevens 200 rifle.

Let's see ?

25-20 Winchester
25-35 Winchester
257 Roberts & Roberts AI (Ackley Improved)
25 Souper (necked up 243 Win or 308 Win down)
25-45 Sharps (AR-15)
25-06 Remington
257 Weatherby Mag
25 WSSM (Winchester Super Short Mag)

That's all I could come up with but I'm sure there's more :D

I missed the 250 Savage as posted above :o

I've never been a fan of the 25-06 due to the need for a long barrel. I really like the handling characteristics of a shorter barrel (I'm not a bench shooter). Even though my little .260 isn't a true quarter bore, I don't think I would ever need anything else close to that size.

I have only shot one quarter bore in my lifetime, a 257 Roberts on the Ruger 77 platform, it was a tackdriver that clover-leafed three different loads.
I did hunt in Wyoming years ago with a Gentleman that used a 257 Weatherby Mag, he dumped a nice Mulie @ 345 yards and two Pronghorns @ 295 and 330.
Definitely impressive.

I like the 25/06 and find it nearly perfect for deer. Works quite well for long range coyotes especially in the wind.
I also have a Vanguard 257 WBY and will say outright that it's somewhat disappointing. I had a custom 257 WBY with a 26" barrel that gave significant velocity increases over the 25/06. The Vanguard w/24" barrel isn't much improvement over my 25/06 24" but recoils more making it harder to shoot as well. I'd definitely pass on a 24" 257WBY.

Quarter Bores

Intrigued by the quarter bores but not enamored by them.I am thinking of rebarreling an old Sears 30-30 with a 25-35 barrel just to have something different.

I have a Savage 99 cambered for the 250-3000 cartridge, I love shooting that rifle.

I would really like to have an AR chambered for the same round.

Best Regards

I am also a fan of the 25's. I have two, .257 roberts, and a handy ruger 77 RSI, chambered for .250 savage. However, this thread, has me thinking that I "need" a .25-06!

A disappointment with the 25's is a smaller bullet selection. I don't think there are any full metal jackets, or true match grade bullets readily available.

I also hand load for my .25 ACP, and I've always wondered why the bullet diameter is different from the rifle rounds (.251 versus .257 respectively). I've never found an answer for that.

As a bit of arcane trivia, it is my understanding that what we call the .257 roberts is really the .257 remington roberts, and that ned roberts' orginal wildcat and the rifles chambered for it by griffin and howe, had a slightly different shoulder angle (or something).

I'm not at all sure that bullet selection is seriously restricted or that either of those options are really necessary. My 25/06's work best with 100 grainers and there are lots of choices.

I have a .25-06 Handi rifle that's shoots sub-MOA if I do my part... I have more than enough deer rifles that I've never hunted them with this rifle but as I see it, it's my wolf, coyote and cougar gun. Now I just need to get out with it...

I've always wanted a .25-35 and I'm thinking if I run across another Savage 340 for a good price, I'd rebarrel it to .25-35...

Yes there's not as many options for .257 bullets but I've always been able to find what I need. As a bonus, when everybody was out of .308 bullets, all the shops still had .257 ones on hand...

Big fan of the .257 here. My first rifle was a .25-06 which I still have. I have enjoyed this rifle for 36 years, it's been groundhog hunting, black bear hunting and deer hunting. Very versatile in my opinion when you look at what I've hunted with it.

I wish there was a better bullet selection but I'm a hunter and what's available suits my needs.
