Quality ammo prices... Better than Cabela's?

My local range has FINALLY (allegedly) begun to allow the use of "outside"
manufactured ammo. (They add like $10 to the range time for the "privilege".)

I have just started looking at online sources for ammo.
Looking at Cabela's, I see a lot of quality .380 SD ammo going for almost
$1 a round! I have also seen reports here that delivery can be very slow due to the supply/demand conditions.

Can I do better elsewhere without giving up quality ammo and good customer service?

http://www.ammoengine.com/ list instock ammo from several companies, I think there are a couple of other sites that do the same thing. So far, except for one case, when I have clicked on the ammo the site has had the ammo in stock. Gives you a comparison for both various brands of ammo and mail order dealers. I have had no issues ordering from anyone on ammoengine, three different suppliers so far. Only issue is that sometimes the webbot they use messes the price up a little, so items at the bottom of the list (sort by price) may not be as outrageous as they first look.

Edit to add:

Since the ammoengine items are in stock, there is not a delay due to backordering, although some of these places will take a few days to ship an order. Last year when i first looked at ammoengine they only listed 5 .380 ACP items, at least now they list 39, but the name brand self defense stuff is about .70 per round.

Thanks... (keep 'em coming)

That's pretty interesting that they are able to list ammo that is actually in stock. You have to wonder why they can't do the same at he ammo websites themselves? I can only guess they just want your money and hope you will be willing to wait and wait(?) until it's available. It's odd that the ammo retailers even release this info to a 3rd party.

I mean after all, "Bud's" clearly notes which guns are out of stock.

I didn't see any of the more interesting .380 ammo like Hornady Critical Defense, Blazers etc. I guess those are particularly hard to get and keep in stock.

winchester white box is good for range shooting. after you've shot the winchester run a mag of SD ammo thru and you'll be good to go.
hornady CD works well in my sig, but buffalo bore +p bhp is what i carry.

See ye the light O my friends. Never worry about this problem again and reload your own ammo. You can reload 9mm and 38 for example for what good .22 ammo costs. It's a great hobby and you'll enjoy the realm of handguns soooo much more......and shoot a lot more too.

I would have put a + 1 on that until the ranges around my locale started forbidding reloads. Most of them demand you buy the ammo from them and if they do allow you to BYOA they charge exorbitant range fees. :(

The sites I have been to do mark whether ammo is in stock or not. Sometimes you have to scroll down the list to find out what is what but I have not gone to a site that did not cover that. Sites like ammoengine help you out by pre sorting. The site I am sure has some sort of marketing agreement with their listed venders. I.e. ammoengine gets a small percent of each sale in exchange for sending business their way. The are certainly good vendors not associated with ammoengine, but it gives you a good general overview of availability and price.

I much prefer Gander Mountain's prices over Cabella's. To be honest, as big as Cabella's is, I was pretty shocked at how high their ammo prices are. Our 3 local gun shops sell the same ammo for less and they are independant stores.

Cabella's has a gigantic selection of items to browse. But to me, they over price lots of those items.

The GM here has everything marked 20-25% ABOVE MSRP. I stopped asking folks for gift cards there, because I just can't bring myself to buy there when there are so many other places

Walmart, Dick's or my LGD have prices lower than what I have found at Cabela's most of the time.
If you have a Cabela's discount coupon or are in a Cabela's location I might buy from them. Having to drive half an hour to shop there makes it even more expensive.

***??? are you serious? Our local GM is so high that the place is deserted all the time. Even the sale prices are higher than the Scheels normal prices!

They had gloves for sale on "75% off clearance". Great deal --except the final price was 12-15 bucks and the gloves were the same exact made in China ones that Walmart sold for 5 bucks. Some deal.

No, I was lying.

Of course I was serious! Next time I go to GM, I'll take a notebook & pen and then call Cabella's with the prices to make sure I'm not getting robbed.:D
