python without rifleing

I purchased some Winchester bulk brass about ten years ago that had no flash holes in several of the cases. I'm wondering if that guy went to work for Ruger.

FWIW, I have seen GI M1911A1 barrels that a combination of corrosive primers, neglect and who knows how many rounds had removed almost all traces of rifling. They looked like smoothbores and shot that way.

Hi i have a silly question i just got a python from my father that he never really shot and i went out and shot it the other day and the bullets were tumbling i thought it was wierd so i took it home cleaned it with a lewis lead remover and looked down the barrel and to my suprize there is no rifling in the barrel dont know how that happen i called colt and they said to send it in to be fixed but a guy at work said it might be a collector piece like a double struck coin so i thought i would check here before i sent it in anyway interested in what you all might think thanks for your time AJ

Surrender to the authorities. I would say to throw it in the bay, but you've already confessed.

Mere possesion IS a crime.

Bull. There have been numerous cases where people came into possession of an absolute forbidding gun, the notorious H&R Handigun that was indeed caught up in the regs as a shot barrel shotgun

Regardless, the usual process was that when BATF was notified they simply took possession of the gun and that was the end of it.

Obviously if you find yourself in that situation be it the Pyton or anything else you need to address it. The OP did in an appropriate way though I would be curious if it was a leading issue

Its not an end of the world issue nor a crime. Have on in the commission of a crime and yes the charges would be added on.

In post 43 t4terrific was, I assume, tongue-in-cheek about fearfulness over possession of the accidental smooth bore. I puzzled over it for a minute before I realized the only thing that would make a reasonable person throw a smoothbore Python into the Bay would be if he were a mob assassin trying to rid himself of the weapon to cover up a crime.

Personally, if I'd had the thing I would have pulled the barrel. At that point I'd have parts for an illegal gun, but not an illegal gun itself. If I thought it had collectors value and I didn't want a Python, I'd have applied for a short barrel shotgun permit so I could reassemble it and auction it off. If I did want a Python and didn't think I could get a special price for it, I'd have measured the bore and, if it were correct, I'd have masked the bluing and sent it to someone who did EDM rifling and got rifling cut in so I could shoot it.

If you wanted to spend the extra funds on custom work, that barrel and cylinder could have been bored out to 41 special. That would be six-gun perfection. A Colt Python shooting a 41 caliber bullet at 900-1000 fps. 41 special is the cartridge that never was but should have been.

I don't believe the poster has a gun with no rifling, then again , I don't really know:), I think it is just leaded up, but all joking aside, The way the 1934 Act reads , the holder of the weapon is deemed the guilty party. That is using small words, but it is what the law read. If you find a sawed off shotgun in the woods, with less than 18 inch barrel and you keep it and { heavens forbid } are caught with it, the law deems you are the one who cut the barrel and are charged as such. Is it fair, don't think so, is it right, no , of course not, is it fact, better honk your horn.

The law was written that way for a reason. If the current possessor of such a gun were not considered the violator, anyone caught with one would just say "I got it that way". as mentioned, the usual way of dealing with an illegal gun is to call BATFE and arrange to surrender it. I have never heard of an arrest or prosecution where the party has come into possession of the gun in an innocent manner and turned it in.

If it should happen that a smoothbore handgun were received from the factory, I think I would first call the factory. Even today, most factories have good relations with BATFE and it is likely they could arrange to have it returned, not turned in or destroyed. (Colt has every FFL and tax stamp there is, so the gun would be legal for them to possess.)

RJ, I suggest you read the posts.

From July 7:

well i finally got the gun back from colt it came in about 2 weeks ago and they did a great job not only did they put a 4 inch barrel on it they refinnished the whole gun its like brand new

So, no, the OP does not have a smoothbore or a heavily leaded gun. He has a repaired one.

You can't count on it all the time, but BATF has MUCH better things to do than prosecute someone with a gun that most likely was a factory error. Why do people on forums try to scare the hell out of everyone for every little thing? Sometimes, BATF is just as reasonable as the average Joe, especially if you are straight up with them, and not TRYING to do illegal stuff.
