PX4 Opinions

The subcompact doesn't have the rotating barrel, but the compact does.

I owned one in 40SW and have shot a 9mm variant next to my SIGs in 9mm. I really don't find much difference in recoil. I've always felt personally that the reduced recoil argument as a bit of marketing.

I have the Px4 9mm full size, it's a great gun. I modified it to the g model. I haven't had any problems with it. I do carry it, it's not that chunky.

I have the PX4 full size in 9mm, and I agree that it is a great pistol. Until I got my CZ SP-01 Tactical, the PX4 was the softest shooting 9mm gun I have. It's still the softest shooting polymer pistol I have. It feels great in my hand, is very accurate and has been 100% reliable.

I agree that it's not the best looking gun on the planet, but who cares. I bought it to shoot, not to show it off. Function rules over form.

Mine is my HD gun. It sits on my nightstand every night.

Great gun.
Know the quirks (rotating barrel should be greased at the locking block etc. )
More susceptible to gunk/grit/debris locking the rotating action
Good da/SA triggers
Feel great in the hand
Very little felt recoil
Very reliable. When maintained properly.

All in all a very good gun. Bought my full-size on a lark cheap and damn if it hasn’t been a GREAT pistol. They really are underrated.

The Px4 was a new and improved Beretta Cougar with a polymer frame. Came out about 14 years ago and is definitely not a modern idea with a definite link to its Cougar predecessor.

I have a Px4D full size because I am a Beretta fan. It was a used police trade in and I got it for $300 or so. I much prefer the 92 series for many reasons but admit my Px4D has the softest, smoothest DAO trigger of any pistol I own. I do not find the recoil to be less. I also think the rotating barrel is more of Beretta gimmick because they did not want to follow the lemmings in putting a polymer frame pistol on the market.

It has not been very successful (like its predecessor the Cougar) in garnering acceptance in LE and has had some issues (like its predecessor the Cougar) due to the rotating barrel. As an individual I have not had any issues with mine. Even so; if I were to carry a Beretta on my belt then my 92D Centurion would get the gig. The Px4 just does not inspire confidence in my opinion.

The main point however is there are some really good people that love it and have had success with the pistol. Heck I am keeping mine but as a range toy. If you find one give it a try and form your own opinions.

cslinger is on the money when it comes to maintenance and lubrication. The Px4 can be a high maintenance lady for the ultimate in reliability.

... My other consideration right now is the m&p 2.0 full size, which fits the same category. I know it'd be a good gun and pleasant shooter, but as I said before, I keep coming back to the idea of a da/sa handgun. Particularly beretta, and to a lesser extent CZ.

The M&P is decent but for your purposes and interests, I think the PX4 blows it away.

For those of you that own/owned the px4, what is the primary role of the gun for you? Just a range toy, or is it your go to HD handgun? If it isn't your HD handgun, what is?

I have a few different guns but the PX4 has retired some of them. It is my go-to HD handgun. I carry it when weather and wardrobe permit, which is at least a third of the year. (If they made one in 10mm or even .357 Sig, it could take over my woods carry too.) The PX4 actually started out as a plinking/range gun for me. I really fell in love with it and the low-profile kit helped it to take over these other duties.

I got a police trade-in full-sized DAO PX4 in 40 caliber for some ridiculous price. I think it was around $200 OTD. (It has a notable scratch on the finish, plus DAO and 40 are not that popular lately, so I may have been the only bidder). It is as accurate as any normal service pistol, and has mild recoil for a 40. I would be comfortable counting on it for SD, and it is a decent range gun. The grip might be kind of chunky for some, but my hands are very large so it fits me well.

Mine has been completely reliable and I have nothing negative to say about it.

High Valley Ranch: I thought that the compact version does not have the rotating barrel?

Tunnel Rat: The subcompact doesn't have the rotating barrel, but the compact does.

Yep, Tunnel Rat got it right. There are three sizes, with the largest two having the rotating barrel.

Beretta PX4 Mods.

I have a PX4 in .45 ACP which I purchased several years ago.

Modifications that I have made:
1. Converted from F Model to G Model with slim wings.
2. Had the slide refinished with WMD Guns Nib-X finish. The original
finish is just a bad paint job and was starting to wear in spots.
3. Replaced the plastic recoil spring guide with a stainless steel guide which
I made myself. I am fortunate enough to have an old Atlas six inch swing
metal lath which I inherited from my father. Made the end screw also.
Fits and works perfectly.
4. Replaced the rear sight with a Burris FastFire III Red Dot Sight.

It is my primary range gun and is a real tack driver with that red dot sight. I have twenty other hand guns which are collecting dust in my gun safe. Love this gun!
