Purpose of guns, according to antis

Antis are mentally driven to make everyone as useless, ineffectual and terrified of life in general as they are. The terror that they might get what’s coming to them (left wing politicals anyway) in the real world drives their obsession for control and obedience of us all. They will never stop, they are unreachable, the price of freedom as a wise man said once, is eternal vigilance.

"Its not the gun in a freeman's hand that scares them. It’s the freedom it engenders that makes them terrified". Or at least as I remember the quote...
 
Any suggestions on how to argue with that kind of logic?

You need to run with a little higher class of people. If you have to convince people that the state isn't going to be there for them after all the sh!t that has gone on then these people you hangout with are not much for thinking.

If all the riots and all the storm aftermath doesn't convince them then they are a lost cause. Move on without them.

It is to COMPEL OBEDIENCE and that's why they oppose off-duty carry.

Their premise is wrong. The gun is not there to 'compel obedience'. That function is fulfilled by the badge, uniform, and the words "halt, Police." The gun is for punching painful holes in people.

Anyway, IF a policeman's gun is PRIMARILY a coercive tool (and it is - criminals don't suddenly become good citizens because of the existance of a badge), then the argument has a point, so far as that goes.

AND, guns are not carried by police for self defense off duty - if they are off duty they are no more the target of violence than anyone else, and should have no rights not granted to anyone else for this reason alone. In a non-CCW state, this argument has no value - either everyone has a right to defense, or no one.


BUT, guns are carried by off duty cops as one of the two minimum pieces of gear necessary for them to go immediately back ON duty should the need arise. This is should be commended because it means the guy is happy to take his work home with him without extra pay. I think that's the only reason that holds any water.

Why do people keep dredging up this old stuff? Anyway, my point(s) still stand for whomever feels the need to walk down memory lane.
