Pros and cons of getting a CCW if you don't intend to carry

I picked up my CCW permit much the same way. Didn't need it except for the once or twice a year "strangeness". But there was talk on going to a 20-40 hr mandatory class and a obsene charge upwards of $700. So I got it. I don't carry all the time, I did at first. However it has increased my quality of life. I now walk more, (I live downtown in a semi-large city) instead of driving.
One of the things that was brought up in the class was a Federal law prohibiting firearms and/or ammo in a school zone. That unless you had a CCW you could be charged if pulled over driving though a school zone with your gun comming back from the range. In fact there is a case pending last I heard where a young man has been charged with just that. That's not the real reason he got pulled over, it's just a prosecuter "stacking charges"

Thanks for all the replys! (I've been lurking for a while but this was my first new topic).

I will get the permit.

David,
The school zone thing does apply to moving traffic within 1000 feet of a school, but not if the gun is unloaded and locked in a case or locked to a gun rack. It also doesn't apply on private property.

Both my wife and I have permits. I carry most every day (except when I know that I'm going up into the state where I'm not allowed to (only criminals are allowed to have guns there :( ). She doesn't carry but got her permit for a couple of reasons (more or less in order).

1. To increase the numbers of people here who do have a permit. It is still a small % of the population but every new one helps.

2. To get the training (such as it is  ) and to get more familiar with guns in general.

3. To have it just in case we were somewhere and I needed to give her my pistol for whatever reason (running into post office comes to mind).

4. To have it "just in case". Although if she ever felt that uncomfortable about going somewhere either I would put on the caveman suit and refuse to let her go or we would both go but go much better armed than just one concealed pistol.

Get the training and get the license/permit. It gives you more options. Even if you don't carry all the time, it is good to have the license for those brief instances in which you might need to have the firearm in your vehicle or on your person and when it might otherwise be illegal. -10CFR

I can't carry daily to and from work because I work on federal property. But, as soon as I get home each day, I strap something on. I keep my GA Firearms License (CCW permit) current for two primary reasons. 1) Defense of my family, self and property (and neighbors) and 2) I see it as a "vote".

But, just like my vote in every election is "just one vote" (What difference can one vote make? Waaaaaaa!), my GFL (CCW permit) increased the numbers in GA by ONE. That's all I can do to help the statistics. So, every time I hear or read the number of CCW permits in GA or the nation, I am proud to know I am being counted.

And, BTW, the State of Georgia and the federal gov't know EVERYTHING about me. Too late to be coy now!
