Proof that hollowpoints can hit bone and exit the body.

Went on a gsw the other day, guy was shot in the leg, about 4-6 inches above the knee. A ton of blood loss, was thinking arterial but didn't see the usual spurting (this was a constant flow). Entry was about the size of a dime, exit wasn't much bigger (exited at an angle, maybe 45 degrees laterally). Ran him to ER, he'll live. Anyway, Dr. said it was a confirmed femur fracture. Got back, later talked to investigating officer and they arrested the shooter, and found the gun. I truly thought .40 fmj by the size of the entry, the bone fracture and then the exit. Turns out it was a 9mm hydra shok, they found the round partially expanded/fragmented in the mailbox post. In ending: if you have to shoot, don't rely on hollowpoints to not overpenetrate. That round COULD have hit a bystander. This is not bunk, it did happen...just won't say when and where. (i'm a firefighter/paramedic in indy, but I also work part time in the surrounding counties.)

Can you say what kind of clothing the man had on when he was shot? Hydra-shok is notorious for plugging up in denim etc...

This shouldn't be new info. Hollowpoints regularly hit bone and exit the body. They are just less likely to exit than are some other designs.

very true. I've been on many gunshots and seen many wounds, but honestly rarely do I see a hollowpoint exit. (at least not in the fatty part of the upper leg or torso. This guy was 250+ lbs, and his upper leg was fairly thick. Most likely it wouldn't have gone thru if it didn't hit the bone. I posted this only to give people something to think about. Shooting someone is a huge liability and people need to be aware of the surroundings. It might be warranted to shoot an attacker, but if that "trusted" round goes thru and hits an innocent bystander, certain repercusions might occur.

Does that count as a peripheral hit? Hoodies in the hood seem to have a knack for shooting each other in the legs, apparently they are deciding to greviously injure their unarmed opponents without taking a murder rap or something? Wonder if it would have exited on a center of mass hit? Bystanders are not an issue in the hood.

wasn't sure what the dispute was over...I think we can guess...the shooter obviously didn't want to kill, we knew that after we got the story, the shooter was really close, 5-10 feet. Also, this didn't happen in the "hood."

Given that the hydrashok had already expanded BEFORE entering the body because it had hit a post, the notion of it clogging up due to denim is moot.

if you want a good self defense round that will not exit the body then get some magsafes. They are a bit pricey but they will work. instead of a copper jacketed round its just the copper jacket with little lead pellets epoxyed in. The us marshals use them on planes and such. There is another style of round called bird shot that works for self deffense too but if u have an auto there is not enough powder to eject the shell so becarefull wich one u get.

I think it hit the post, after leaving the body. At least that's how I read it.

Concur....I didnt get that from reading the OP. The bullet exited the leg then hit then hit the post.

Regardless, this just confirms that bullets can do very strange things.

In ending: if you have to shoot, don't rely on hollowpoints to not overpenetrate.

If it will seldom over penetrate it will sometimes not penetrate enough.

If it will usually penetrate enough it will sometimes over penetrate.

Nothing is perfect and you shouldn't rely on anything when it comes to shooting people.

I think the creeps you are referring to have little or no training, don't use their sights, and jerk their triggers, which leads to rounds hitting low, maybe even after hitting the ground.

there is differance between exiting the leg and the torso... and simply leaving the body is fairly common i thought, anyways i keep my home defense gun with hps in the hope that the shot wont be able to exit the house as easy not the intruder,, i mean a shot that stops in the intruder/attacker is perfered(by me anyways) but my main concern was not exiting the structure and possibably endangering the neighbors..

Yeah, you can NEVER bet on what a bullet will do and must always be aware of backstop.

A good JHP will boost your odds though.

As a sidenote, I consider the Hydrashock outdated and surpassed by a number of other rounds, esp. the Gold Dot. In 9mm I'd run a 124gr weight unless the barrel was very short, then I'd go 115.
