Preferred carry/duty round in .40S&W

With a 4 inch barrel or longer, I would pick Federal HST or Gold Dots, both in 180 grain. Lots of good choices out there though.

I'm issued 180gr HST but I don't have any choice in that matter. Wouldn't matter anyway, I also carry 124gr HST in my 9mm carry gun. Not that it's the only good choice, it's just the conclusion I arrived at after some personal research, and Gold Dots were impossible to find at the time I was searching for 9mm carry ammo.

Based on tests like Lucky Gunner did, I went with the Winchester Train & Defend (180gr) because it had enough penetration and really good expansion.

Of the ones with good expansion, it was also in stock at a LGS.

If I remember correctly you mentioned in another thread that this gun also was going to serve as a field/woods gun. In that scenario, I think you'd be best served with a hard cast offering from either Buffalo Bore or Underwood.

If you roll your own that opens up the field to Hornady's line of hunting bullets or Nosler's.

For urban carry, any of the choices already discussed would work well. I carry Hornady's Critical Defense or Gold Dots in most of my handguns.

We switch back and forth between Winchester Ranger T 180's and Federal HST 180's depending on whoever is running the cheapest deal. Both seem to work fine, can't say if they perform well in real life applications as we aren't exactly running around getting in OIS' all the time.

I'm carrying Sig v crown. Look at them. I'm complaining convinced that the design is good. As long as the metals are right. A test that I read tested them against the host, and the host functioned PERFECTLE. the Sig performed will. The Sig seems to be velocity sense, and time may change that.

The perfect petals on the hst allowed deeper penetration. The 9mm was not adequate. The main reason I like the Sig is that the flatter crown ma be better on settings other than calibrated gel, such as light barriers.

Mine are loaded with the white box Q4369 government overrun Winchester 180gr hp's. No problems ever in my 96 Beretta or S&W Sigma.

I've been carrying 180gr GDHP, but I'm going to switch to HST when I can get a good deal on some from Massammo, they've been out of stock for a while now.

I loaded up some Nozzler 150 grain HPs and they sure looked like they would work just fine. I do not have ballistic gel so I used phone books.

Good info. I've shot quite a bit of USA JHP, 40 & 45 into water jugs and got exactly that type of performance. I deem it excellent ammunition, usually available at a decent price.

IMHO it's gonna be good enough most of the time the problem arises when barriers and bone enter the equasion thats when the old technology looses jackets or doesn't expand.

Besides if you shop around you can find the premium LEO overruns/surplus for about what wally world gets for WWWB
