Precision rimfires: CZ vs. Savage (vs. Savage)

The CZ magazines and mag releases are fine, don't know why you would be worried about them. The fit and finish on the CZs are excellent, I know of some cases where people have problems with feeding and extraction with the Savages, but with CZs that seems to be very uncommon.

Accuracy wise the CZs have a very good reputation, I would say better than Savages. I'm not a huge fan of the accu trigger, and my CZ one is pretty darn good, and they are easily made excellent with a kit.

If the prices were similar I'd go for a CZ with no looking back. Even if it was a bit more expensive, it'd still be my pick.

I have a CZ 452 Trainer and I agree with the statement about the 11mm dovetail. To me, it is not well thought out.

What I did was get an 11mm picatinny adapter and put that on. It does move the scope up a little but now I can switch scopes from any other rifle that has the same mounting system and boresight it with a laser to be on paper with the first shot. A lot of folks at my range really like Savage and I won't knock them because I don't shoot them. My 452 is a pretty good shooter and I did have a trigger job done on the rifle and that has helped a lot.

I bought a Ruger 7722 a few weeks ago and have not been real happy with the accuracy. I had a trigger job done on it and it is not much better.

I just had the rifle pillar bedded and glassed in and floated the barrel. I am heading out to the range this morning to see if it helped.

I purchased the factory CZ rings and was done with it.
They're very robust rings.

It's not so much that I am worried about them. I am just curious on the construction of the magazine and position/manipulation of the release. The Savage magazine and release leave a bit to be desired IMO. As I have never handled or shot a CZ, I'm just looking for thoughts/opinions.

Still leaning towards the Savage FV-SR, but I'd like to to find a shop that carries CZ rimfires. The safety and bolt handle position seem to be a bit better placed than the Savage.

I cannot speak to the Savage as I do not own one.

I did buy a CZ452 a few years ago. I've had a few 22's but the 452 easily surpasses all of them for accuracy. Very nice fit and finish. And the stock is sized very well for me.

The trigger was crisp but a little heavy for fine work so I bought a trigger kit for IIRC about $12 - different spring. Lightened it up significantly while staying crisp.

Since then this thing is amazing. You can really call your shots. Shoot smiley faces, shoot the tacks holding your target, etc.

Jo6Pak - My mags are made out of steel. Never had any issues with their function in any way.

I also have a 452 MT and its a solid gun and a great shooter (does well with Federal HV though I suspect if I can find some SV it will be better yet)

Its not light by 22 standards but you get what you pay for accuracy wise.

Rings are not an issue. Warne makes a mid level set (7.3) that works well and as I recall I paid all of $26 for them (Sportsman Warehouse).

The Warnes are good quality and actually 3/8 and 11mm dual base (the dimple to the left side for 11mm)

Basically the same layout as the Savage FV-SR. Short, light, threaded barrel. But with a target style stock. Not sure if it is $300 more rifle than the Savage though..

I did get to handle a used CZ452 at a local gunshow today. It was well-worn, but it did give me a chance to handle and check out the safety and bolt handle position. Not sure if it is better than the Savage, just different. Magazines are definitely better quality than the Savage mags, and the release seemed better thought out.
All of these things are subjective and will just take some getting accustomed to.

Sav vs CZ

I own two Savage rimfires (but they are 17hmr and 17WSM), both have the accu-trigger and I am quite satisfied with both. My buddy has a CZ452. All three shoot with comparable accuracy. The CZ quality is apparent in the bolt, safety, fit and finish. It reminds me of an old Mauser or Win52 in that regard. However, you are talking about a hunting rifle to carry in the field. One of my Savages has the heavier bbl and weighs about 7.5lbs, and the other is the lighter bbl and synthetic stock. I hate the plastic stock but for upland game hunting, I love the lighter weight and it gives up nothing in accuracy to the other two. So, in my opinion, I would go with the lighter Savage option. Spend the extra money on a brick of premium ammo and it will out shoot both the others, lol.

By the time a 22 has traveled down 16" of barrel all of the propellant charge has burned and it has attained max velocity. There will not be any accuracy gain to go with a longer bbl as long as they are all going to be using optic sights. If you do choose to go with CZ find a 452. They have the better threaded receiver as opposed to the pinned type used in the 455. That said my most accurate 22 has the bbl pinned into the receiver, so maybe that don't matter??

I agonised over my CZ 452 subtype, looked at the heavy barrelled Varminter for a while and went with an iron-sighted (and accordingly longer-barrelled) version in case I dropped it and smashed or unzeroed the scope, accepting the drawbacks as I did so. IMO they spoil you for everything else (short of dedicated target rifles) once you've owned and used one.

Thanks everyone on for the replies and reviews. Some great information here.

I have decided that I will probably go with Savage FV-SR because it fits my criteria the best at a price that is more than reasonable.

I have my gun guy tracking down a Kadet kit for my CZ, and after that I will most likely be getting the new rimfire rifle.

Hopefully by then, I can get some fodder for it:rolleyes:
