Pre-Selected For Security Check

I didn't read each and every post so forgive me if this was covered...shortly after 9-11 I saw a thing on 20/20 or some other type program where this dude was of...how should I say this...middle eastern descent??? Yeah thats it...anyway I know this doesn't pertain to this but hear me out..this guy was a prominant MD...top of his field (some sort of specialist) and his family had been in the U.S. for better part of a hundred years or so...(not saying this in a bigotry kinda way) He looked like an average, white, elderly male...but still carried a middle eastern sounding name...he could not anter the airpoort without being searched! Now this guy waqs some kinda specialist and had to fly all over the country tons of times a year, and was searched EVERY time. Thats gotta suck! I know that it doesn't pertain 100% to the cases stated above...but at what point is "national security" become just plain out "racial profiling"??? Sorry I didn't pay better attention to the episode, but being a dumb redneck who never fies, I only half a#sed paid attention...I did think it was kinda overboard....Anyway I feel your pain..I wouldn't be very happy either, maybe someday everybody will relaxe a little.
I mean yes I know they've got our best entrest at heart, and I also know that most terroist are of middle eastern descent...but from all the news coverage I've seen...we've never been attacked by one who is 60 years old either.. (remember they are back home promising the new upstarts 60 virgins and not getting their hands dirty)...people in authority can tend to go overboard sometimes...Sorry for rambling...

P.S. 4 Wheel Drive, what kinda rig ya got...(my two favorite hobbies shootin' and wheelin' :p )

your stats

your stats about how 10 out of 32 in the russian school situation were arab in decent. how about the other 22 people who werent arab. 22 out of 32 people involved in the russian school situation were NOT arab.

its all in how you look at it. i have had the most success, when i take out my jewlery and keep it in my carry-on. and i check in 2hrs before a flight and 3 hrs if it is a international flight. i also try to make sure to be extra friendly to the airline rep working the desk when i declare my luggage.

(on the flip side i havent flow with my guns yet and so i think thats less of a red flag that goes up on my name)

declaring a gun although is needed, will make the airline people just a little bit more jumpy. although it doesnt make sense you will probably get screened

Out of the three times I've had to fly somewhere this year, my checked baggage has been searched. Now, I doubt that I fit any "profile" in behavior or otherwise that would flag me as a terrorist. I work for a federal agency, and one of the times I flew, it was on business, and my luggage was inspected. I had purchased my ticket using a corporate travel agency, paid for it using a government travel card, arrived at the airport well ahead of time, was polite and friendly. I'm a middle-aged white woman, with no criminal record. Now, why has my luggage been searched? Why? Two out of three times. The one time my luggage wasn't inspected, I only had a carry on bag, so there was no checked baggage to inspect. I just hope that the TSA guys enjoyed pawing through socks and underwear of a middle-aged woman.

And yes, I understand that there are blonde and blue-eyed terrorists these days, but as someone else mentioned, there are behaviors and profiles that might flag someone as a terrorists. I have no idea why I would be flagged.

Aside from your completely anecdotal reports that "them Arabs aren't gettin' searched", there is no reason to believe that is true. EVERYBODY is getting searched, just not every time.

I can't believe this concept is so hard to swallow. If you think the Al Quaida or whatever is going to keep sending Arabs to the airport with box cutters you're retarded.

If you object to not enough people being searched, call your senator and ask for a larger national budget.

Right now this seems to be an Inconvenienced Soccer Mom vs. National Security debate. After 9/11 I couldn't care less whos bloomers are getting rifled through. Any talk about "the wrong people" getting searched is purely preposterous, and the moment certain groups are given a free pass, that's exactly what the terrorists will ALL look like.

I'm a middle-aged white woman, with no criminal record. Now, why has my luggage been searched? Why? Two out of three times.

Random selection will do that. Most folks seem to think "random" means "evenly spread out". Nope. It means there's no pattern. Which means that out of every 100 times you go through, you might get searched none or one or one hundred.

Maybe I should start entering sweepstakes and lotteries. With my record at being selected for searches, I just might win a few million dollars.

No, Murphy's Law will kick in and you won't win anything. :D

BTW, if you were flying one way, that will trigger a search every time.

Why?

Since none of the 9-11 hijackers were flying one way, or paid with cash, anyone who flies one way or pays with cash is a prime suspect.

Did you follow that?

:D

I think there may have been some hijackings before 9/11. What do you think?

MAYBE, there is some reason to believe that not-so-smart terrorists or criminals do dumb stuff like: Buy one way tickets, or pay cash. They may be dumb, but still dangerous.

What a concept.

Handy
... Sure, this is all stupid ...

Now, just remember it was you who posted that. And it answers all your questions.

Now behave, and get used to the perpetual war for perpetual peace. Get to like it and expect it to grow. Avoid saying things like, "this is stupid"; you might get the attention of the Ministry of Love making such statements ;)

Quartus, I wasn't flying one-way. Corporate travel agency, corporate credit card, business trip, federal agency. Luggage searched. Random selection, I guess.

i've given up trying to figure it out..

when it happens, it happens.

i just hope they get that proposed "frequent flyer" pre-ID done, so I an just move along quickly.

Handy,

You yourself posted:
Sure, this is all stupid

You're right, and you answered your own questions.

Yep - my final answer. A), C) and D) don't add up so it must be B)

Handy,

You posted ...

Sure, this is all stupid
... referring to the "security measures" at airports.

I said "you are right". For me that is enough; it says a great deal about the big picture.

OK; you also posted ...

If you want to bitch about something, may I suggest our complete lack of cargo container tracking and security?

Now if you want to go from airports to shipping by all means. So to suggest I complain about a lack of cargo container tracking and security I will open with this:

If the current airport security is admittedly stupid (and it is. You said so, I agreed) - what for? Why address another national security issue and take it seriously - if at the same time the other national security measures are "stupid". A farce?

If those in the WH are either a) Not capable b) Not willing to allow the airlines to, or implement themselves, a rational and logical security program at airports - why on earth would I want to imagine they could or would do anything beyond stupid about shipping ports and containers?

Let's look at the whole picture; and borders terra firma. What kind of imbecile would lead his family to believe he can protect them when he allows absolutely anyone to come onto his property and into his house providing they use the perpetually unlocked backdoor and windows - and all but begs them to come in? And when they are inside they are not identified and ejected? Is guarding the door to the family car when they load up to drive to school or the mall going to do it? Is putting cameras in the bedrooms and bathroom going to do it? Is checking all mailed packages coming in first going to do it? What would anyone's conclusion be concerning such a man?

It can be reduced too two choices;

a) He is an imbecile

b) He isn't being honest with his family about something - or a few things.

Those who currently hold power in this country - both in the WH and Congress are certainly not stupid. All jokes aside; men and women - on the average - who aquire such positions are sane, rational and somewhat educated people. And it is not that there isn't several thousand years of history on which to draw some conclusions about a great many things - including "terrorism" and securing a nation.

If they are not stupid - then what's the game? You decide.

LAK, I asked you to explain this:
Welcome to the perpetual war for perpetual peace. Be assured by the Ministry of Love that this is all for your own good. The Ministry of Truth said so.
And you purposely have not. Maybe you think you have, but I doubt you're normally that confused, so you must just be insulting me.

"Sure, this is all stupid" I said this by way of acknowledging that a) the best gate security doesn't make up for poor security elsewhere in the airport, and b) noone, given 9/11, is ever going to passively allow their plane to be hijacked again, anyway.

Why hasn't the WH instituted port security? Because it costs money, nothing bad has happened yet due to its lack, and that means it is not politically expediant to do this election year. Just as airport security wasn't increased despite intercepts indicating airliners were a target prior to 9/11.

I don't know what game you're playing, but I appreciate straight talk, not riddles.

Since 9-11-2001, My wife and I have flown 5 times (twice to Hawii, 3 times to LA), and I have never been pre-selected. My wife has all five time, at our own small town airport. Never away from home.

The first time my wife was preselected I asked the examiner checking her lugage why she was selected and I was not. I was told that a computer made that choice at the time the ticket is purchased. I asked why I was not included since they were both purchased together using company funds. She could not explain why. Said I should have been pre-selected (checked my ticket), but was not.

The only time I was stopped and re-checked was when I forgot the cell phone in my pocket and set off the alarm. Once without thinking, I truthfully told them why I carry a flashlight on a night flight. I very seriously thought they might walk me off the property or detain me. (If the plane crashes and I survived the crash, I wanted a light so my wife and I could get out in the remaining seconds before the cabin filled with fumes or flames)

Ministry of love????????

Well, as I'm notoriously slow, I'll just assume that everyone else understands your "explanation", and I'll get back on the short bus.
