Pre-ban mags -- worth it?

A simple question. Are pre-ban mags worth the prices that are being charged for them, for self-defense purposes?

I think the prices for USED hi-cap Glock mags are a barrier to buying Glock pistols which could use them. I for one am not interested in buying or carrying a handgun without owning full capacity mags for them. On the other hand, 15 round Mec-Gar mags for Ruger 9 MMs can be had for $35 from CDNN. Mec-Gar mags are better made than Ruger factory mags. For $15 you can get quite good stainless USA 15 rounders for Rugers. The availability of 15, 17, and 20 round mags for Ruger 9 MMs makes these pistols more attractive than some other brands, at least in my view.

Not worth it in my book. When I can carry a full size gun, it is a 1911. 8+1 with a spare mag will do the trick. When I want something smaller for IWB it is a glock 23. $90 for an extra 3 rounds????? Right. 10+1 with a spare mag should work just fine.

Now if I was carrying a Glock 17, or some other hi-cap 9, I might see the utility in the grossly overpriced mags. I have some of these guns, with the standard cap mags, but don't feel the need to carry them.

My 2 cents, YMMV.

P.S. Dont' confuse this point of view with approval and acceptance of that darned stupid law that limits mags to 10 rounds, because I don't.
 
Pre-ban mags aren't even suppose to exchange hands in CA. So, NO they aren't worth it. But, if I were find some in a trash bin, or found them carelessly thrown in my range bag...that's a different story :rolleyes:
 
Depends on the price, depends on the gun.

If a gun was robbed of 33% or more (G17/19/20/22, Beretta 92, Full-size 9mm USP's, Rugers, CZ's, *&*'s, etc.) of its designed capacity, I consider it pretty crippled. If it's one to three rounds (G21/23, Beretta 96, most other full-size .40's), then I'm not as determined to track down a full capacity mag.

How stupid do the manufacturers of Beretta 96 or *&* 4006 mags feel when making sure that you can't squeeze that eleventh round in?

I'll shell out bucks willingly under $50. I start to get balky in the $51-$75 price range. Above that dollar figure? Well, I have one Glock 20 mag...
 
Like anything else, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If everyone would restrain from buying them, they would have to come down in price.

Why are Glock Hi-caps selling for $80 and Hi-caps for other brands going for $10 - $15 ??

Yes Glock prices are high, put try to find Sig 228 or HK hi-caps under $100.

Glock used their head when they traded agency after agency new restricted mags for the old unmarked ones that originally came with the deal. They wound up with thousands of pre-ban hi-caps that could be re-circulated. The swap was free to the agency.

Tamara has a good fomula for determining what 10 rounder to carry. I sometimes carry a G-23. I have three hicaps but leave them in the safe. I am very comfortable carrying a .40 S&W with 10+1.

I hate the law as much as anyone. No one has ever shown me any evidence that this stupid regulation has reduced crime. Sara Brady, where are you, show me!!

Not worth it at current prices.

I've priced factory mags for my G19 (~ $70) and my G21 ( >$100), and I just can't see paying that sort of money for them. I can see $40-$50, on the outside, but I'm not getting any until they come down to that range.

But if I get picked up on the local SD, that becomes a different situation. The price point would then fall well below that range, and I get several.

I still don't understand the logic of that, though. Why are peace officers not penalized while the common citizen is? Don't both carry firearms for the same reason (defense of self and others)?
 
It depends on you, how back you want them, why you want them.
What kind of gun you have, are they available, are they quality and how bloody much are they? Most of the time if they are a quality magazine and they are under 40-50 $ Its worth it...if
they are your carry weapon magazines...they are very much worth it. Mec Gar makes alot of mags that are the BEST....

Since my Sig P228 came with (2) pre-ban
high capacity magazines; I would have to
vote NO, they are definitely not worth
the extra cash by purchasing as an added
option. I've alway's said, "only
one shot counts; the ONE that render's
a perp DOS".

I'd have to say "Not Worth It", To me I used to think that in a gun like a G-17 maybe but at arround $100. 00 it has gotten ridiculous, what used to kill me was when I had a G-23, and a 10 rd mag was $20 and 13rd was $90 you could get 4 or 5, 10 rd for the price of one hi-cap for a difference of 3 rds. If you're that deep in it you need back-up more than anything get a vest and a cell phone!
 
Being a long time USP owner, I'm used to paying $40 - $50 for a 10 round mag, so now that USP 9 & 40 hicaps can be found for $60 - $65, I don't mind paying a LITTLE more for them.

As for the Glock 19, if you look around HARD, you can actually find NFML/NDF's for about the same price range... The rest, fegitaboutit.

So a little more, I can do... 6x regular price, uh nope.

As for me, I love the Brady bill and sleep better at night knowing that if I was the 11th victim of a spree killer, he would have to reload first. :barf:

Beretta hi-caps are such a deal because hundreds of them grow legs and wander off military bases every week. ;)

Find me a USP, P-226 or P-228 mag for $10-15.

P7M13 mags trade for $115-$135.

My pocketbook/common sense tells me no. My gut tells me yes.

Is the T-bone steak at the local resturant worth more than the round steak? Depends on how much money you have got in your pocket and your what your gut tells you.


As for me, a $75.00 preban mag rides in the grip of my P229 and another one rides my belt. I have no desire for any others at the current price of $125.00+. I can my shoot 10 round Sig mags for practice. But consider this, a 10 round factory Sig mag is $39.95 around here. If I ever find another 12 round .40/.357 P229 Sig mag for $80.00 or under it will probably go home with me.
 
I'm bucking the trend in this post but they are worth it to me for a couple reasons. First, if the gun was designed to carry 13, 15, or 17 rounds, that's what it should have in it. If not then get a smaller gun. Second, I resent the hell out of some pin head politician deciding I am a criminal if I carry an "ammunition feeding device" that holds more than some arbitrary number of rounds. $&#%@ them! To me it is one of the prices of freedom.
 
I only have two pre-ban Glock 17 magazines because of their rediculous pricing.

As I've converted to low cap, old, heavy, single action large bore pistols anyway ;) one of these days I might be tempted to cash them in. For now they serve as backup.
 
For all the 'hs2k is just a glock copy' folks, I get a chuckle out of the fact that I can buy high caps for my pistol for $14 a piece. Heck, I would have to pay more for that for 10 rounders!

I prefer high caps when available, and at a reasonable price. Price and availability of high caps is actually one of the criteria when I look for any type of gun.
