Powder recommendation cast 158

I wouldn't use Blue Dot with lead.
On the other hand, I've used Blue Dot in several cartridges, and had no problem. Same with Red Dot and Green Dot. Go figure :) .

As for lead bullets, you just match hardness to pressure and your fine. I've loaded up to 1333fps in .44Mag with a BHN15 240g SWC with no problem. All I shoot is lead, and it isn't something to be afraid of. Just have to realize you can't shoot hard bullets slowly, and soft bullets fast. Never have used any gas checks either. Yes, throats have to be right, forcing cone, cylinder/barrel alignment, and no or just minor constrictions in the barrel.

Lead that hard will likely need fairly high pressure/power loads to keep from leading. Run them at low pressure/velocity and they'll probably lead. I would start with the H110 and if not happy, try Blue Dot next. But regardless of the powder chosen, the loads near maximum should lead less than light loads with a BN18 alloy.

Edit: Sorry, missed the post above which says much the same thing.

Allient has a great recipe for .40 165 grain JHP using Blue Dot that I actually use as carry ammo. I usually don't load my own carry ammo but I trust this Blue Dot enough to carry it.

Seems like a lot of folks are down on/scared of blue dot. I have never any bad experience with blue dot, but I really don't "experiment" with it much. I use it for loads that others have tested before me...........

I am not down on Blue Dot, or TiteGroup, or even HiSkor800x. I just have had bad results with them while using plain based lead. I do not run gas checks.

For jacketed rounds they work great.

I use Blue Dot for JHP .357 Mag loads. I use TiteGroup for plated, and jacketed 9mm, HiSkor works great if hand weighed, and used with 230 grain XTP's.

It is just those 3 have given me leading problems with 5 calibers that with other powders have not had that problem.
