Possible new purchase

So for my anniversary, the wife is good with my purchasing a new pistol, instead of trying to figure out what I want. I'm looking for a 45, maybe a 9mm if I can't find one in my price range. Upper limit is around $400.

Suggestions? I'm not too picky on brands, as long as they're not super junky. I have a few Taurus revolvers, so that brand is fine with me (I know they get a lot of love/hate).

I'd like the largest size I can get for my money, this won't be concealed carry.

If you are not against shopping online, I'd suggest checking Slickguns.com and seeing if something there strikes your fancy. They have a few there on sale that you might find very interesting.

You could get a S&W Shield or a Ruger SR9E in 9mm for that price range. Check out gunwatcher.com for lowest online price searches.

.45, Bersa Ultra Carry. Should come in about that.

9mm, any number. I'd be looking at Ruger's new SR9E

If I were in the market for a gun in the $400 range, I'd probably look for a used Hi Power. There are (or at leased used to be) a bunch on the market well within that price range.

Buds will do a police trade in now and again, usually getting Glocks or M&Ps. They have an M&P right now for ~$350.

The Sig SP2022 is a crap ton of firearm for the price. They can be had at around $400.

Check out the Tristar line. Very reasonably priced CZ75 clones. I'm particularly interested in the P-120. An all steel copy of the CZ SP-01 for about half the price.

They also offer a lighter alloy frame model T-120 for a little less weight.

All reviews I have seen say it is very well made for the price, and a real value in a CZ75 designed handgun.

A LGS had the T-120 model in his case for $369, but when I went to his customer appreciation day this afternoon to buy it, somebody done appreciated it away from me.

Used BHP would be great. You can get ones from Cole off of gun broker for $400.

The other option I would consider is the Sig SP2022 with Night Sights and 2 15 round mags. which can be had in tutone from Top Gun Supply for $399 with $5 shipping.

You should be able to find a Ruger SR45 in the 400 range.

Reliable, accurate, plenty big enough.

You can also look into some of the CZ 75 clones in 9mm.

I just added a Kahr CT-45 7+1 to my collection. I paid 330 for it comes with one mag. Solid performer so far!

Lots of good suggestions. What's the intended use of the gun? Do you prefer hammer-fired or striker-fired? If hammer-fired, DA/SA or SAO? Metal frame or polymer frame?

One great gun that hasn't been mentioned: the Stoeger Cougar. Stoeger is a subsidiary of Beretta, and it manufactures the Cougar on the same tooling Beretta originally used to produce the Cougar under its name. Very reliable, accurate, soft-shooting metal-framed DA/SA pistols which can be found new for well under $400.

Edit: typo

The Sarsilmaz looks nice, that's the look I'm going for. Any issues with it? I haven't heard of the brand before (but then again there are a lot I haven't heard of), looks to be better quality than a HiPoint :)

Also should have mentioned I would like SA/DA.

I bought mine to use on duty, has had several hundred rounds ran through it. Actual count unknown, but it's never had a failure and I've shot some seriously hot loads through it. It's fed and ejected everything, including three reloads that split the cases.

It's made in Turkey, and even though they are half a world away, customer service was good. When I purchased mine, the right side grip was cracked. A couple of emails later I had two new sets of grips with new screws, and a bunch of free swag; keychains, etc.

Mags are made by Mec Gar and were under $30 a piece when I bought two extras. The mags could probably use better springs, as mine were slow feeding if left unused and fully loaded. They always worked though, but I eventually loaded only 13 in each, which still gave me 40 rds of 45acp on tap.

The ergos are awesome. It sure doesn't feel like a doublestack 45 while in hand! It is heavy, but that helps make it a really soft recoiling gun, imo.

I love mine, and it's not going anywhere soon, lol.

I second the recommendation for the Cougar. Definitely not "junky" and you get Beretta quality for a Stoeger price. SAR is a good option too. I have the ST10 and it's a good quality gun. I really like the guns coming out of Turkey (Stoeger, Regent, SAR) for a quality gun at a good price. Good luck (you have a good wife!).
