popular lever calibers

I've got the following:

  1. Browning 1886 repro 45/70
  2. Marlin 45/70 guide gun
  3. Uberti Henry repro 45 Colt
  4. Henry big boy 44 mag
  5. Uberti 1873 repro 44-40
  6. Henry big boy steel 357 mag
  7. Winchester 94 30-30
  8. Savage 99 243
  9. Winchester 9422 XTR 22 mrag
  10. Winchester 9422 XTR 22 LR
  11. Marlin pre safety model 39 22

What am I missing? Looking for reasonably popular calibers preferably in rifles I don't have.

I'd like to have a model 92 (thinking about a stainless Rossi 454) and maybe a Browning BLR (thinking about a 308 but concerned about recoil as a shooter).

I'm looking for an ideal visceral experience recoil wise as a shooter.30-30 is just a bit much recoil.
I like the 44 mag Henry better than the 357, the latter has a recoil pad and I wish it didn't. The 45/70s are real fun with cowboy loads.

I'm primarily a shooter but may do some limited deer or pig hunting. I'm open for suggestions. I'm not a reloader so I look for factory ammo that's available the cheaper the better.

Please don't proselytize about reloading.

Thanks but not easy to find ammo for those old boys. I had an original Krag 95 carbine, kicked like a mule and was wildly inaccurate, probably shot out.

My grand daughter hunts with my 336-g in 35.Win. She is 19 now and she has taken many deer with it in the last 7 years. My wife shoots a Win. modle 88 in 308 It was made in 56 and shoots smooth as cane be.Not much recoil with the two guns

Not all were unique to lever guns but the Savage 99 and Browning were made in numerous calibers. As was the Winchester Model 95 (30-40 and 405 come to mind). I have a 99 in 303 Savage and I don't think it was offered in any other platform.

35.Win? You mean 35 Remington or 358 Win?

I'm a lefty who likes levers in part because they are ambidextrous. I also despise superfluous lawyer engineering.

Winchester Model 88
Has a right handed crossbolt safety, right? meh...
Any of the Octagon Barreled 1973 Marlins.
Pre safety? What year did Marlin jump that shark?

I've thought about 35 or 358 but worried about recoil. Same for 7mm08 and 308 in lever guns.

You have a 45-70 and are concerned about recoil from any of the above? 45-70 recoil can vary considerably depending on the wide range of loads possible and the rifle, but the lighter loads will exceed 20 ft lbs. Up to 60+ ft lbs for some of the heavier loads. 35 Rem is in the 12-15 ft lb range, 358, 7-08, or 308 will be in the 15-17 ft lb range.

I have the Rossi in a 357. Real tack driver. The 300 savage in a 99 is also a great gun. 458 Winchester super hard to find but a heck of a rifle. We had one and along with a 100 year old Winchester in 44-40 we got broken into and they were gone. Won't ever see those again. Before we thought we needed safes.

Ejection I could care less about, just operation.

Thanks jmr40, good to know. Beyond my experience so I had to ask.

Ok, if 30-30 is a bit much in recoil, you need the new deluxe recoil pad from Marlin for their 336XLR.
Call Marlin, they'll sell you one inexpensively.

Not sure who is making it for them, but its niiiiiiiiiiiice :)
Tames the .45-70 very nicely as well!! for that caliber, use the one from the 1895-SBL.

That is a VERY nice collection you have going there...can only think of one style of lever-action you don't have...
which would be the Marlin Lever-Matics...
56 - .22lr box-mag
57 - .22lr tube mag
57M - .22WMR tube mag
62 - .256Magnum or .30carbine, box-mag
You'd probably like the 62 best in .30-carbine due to ammo availability...
recoil is negligible & it'll take deer & hog all day long ;)

With what you have already, you really have no need.
With 11 leverguns, to want more, is it not about greed?:p
No matter how many you aquire, you can never be satisfied.
Like the king with 300 wives and 700 concubines who can never find the time to know any of them well, it makes me wonder if you can shoot any of them very well. Your glass is so half-EMPTY, you can't see how full it really is. What? You have no 38-55? No 32 Winchester Special? No 32WCF? No 250 Savage? No 33 WCF? The list of what you don't have is endless. How can you sleep at night? Maybe you should just get an FFL and become a gun dealer; turn that insatiable craving into a profitable business.
Don't mind me; I'm just a poor soul that can't afford to indulge such cravings as well as you can. If I could, I'd likely be worse.
But, you know, it's been said, that guns are better than women; because, if you need to, you can put a silencer on your gun.;)
