pondering a lot lately; buying guns thru gun shop OR private party

+1 to whoever pointed out that door to door already happens in CA. There's another thread in General Discussions where the poster says he had to register two rifles in New York and a year later he was asked to turn them in; I don't know how factual that post was.

I just figure buy them anyole way you can and if the government agents start going to your local gunshop or pawnshop to look at all the 4473's, then hope that they've (the gunshop or pawnshop) had an unfortunate fire recently.

Getting a Concealed gun permit in most states does not

require you register any gun.. I know it doesn't in either Florida, S.C., NH, PA, CT, or ME or VA... because I have one for each of those states...

What this country really needs to do is 'call the question' on gun ownership and quit compromising... I say this for both sides of the argument.

Gun owners need to realize that citizens have a right to arms... not certain types but all guns.... Even fully automatic assault rifles..

Antis just need to say we don't have a right or no longer need it or what ever and the try to repeal the 2nd Amd.

As for the posters original question... nope...no bodys coming to your door anytime soon... the best way to get your guns is to have you take them to the metal recycling center.... that's how it will work in the end... gun by gun.

Illinois

actually in illinois they do keep records of guns purchased at gun stores. we've been trying for a long time here to get those records destroyed. they are kepted by the ill state police.

IMO, guns will be fine - HOWEVER, ammunition will be the weak link - that is where the anti's will go - without ammunition, a gun is worthless...

Ammo is indeed the weak link. Any credit card purchase of ammo will be available in the data base. Always pay cash for ammo. ;)

In all seriousness, buy what you want where you want. Most all of my guns have been bought through dealers. Some are family heirlooms. Either way, I'm not worried about the jack boots coming and taking them. I am worried about the anti's making it more difficult use them.

But, CA is in a considerable minority of states that actually have a handgun registration system (do they register long guns too?). So, they know who in the state has what.

In most states, this is not the case - that is, most states do not track who has what in their possession. And since many states allow FTF sales with no requirement of record keeping, there is no way to know whether the original purchaser still has the weapon, or sold/traded it.

About the only way to seize a make/model or type of gun in VA would be to simultaneously search every car, truck, boat, home, apartment, mobile home, trailer, barn, shack, tent, outhouse and cave in the state.

Just saying that I think to hold up CA as an example for all is odd to my mind, since CA is already way out on a fringe when it comes to requirements for gun purchase and ownership.

Stand up and be counted. The more of us there are, the stronger we are. Gun owners "off the radar" will only keep their stuff an extra day or so in any tin foil scenario and do the rest of us a disservice in the meantime.
I am in complete agreement. Do everything lawfully and properly. Even if the state and fed doesn't keep paperwork forever, I'm sure they keep a count on numbers. Personally, I want them to see huge numbers of lawful firearms and firearm owners.

blume - seems ironic that in NZ gun ownership is similar to Europe - regulated and highly restricted, BUT you can buy a suppressor OTC with no paperwork becauase that is a safety thing (hearing)

IMO, the antis will go after your ammunition, the ability to buy it or the components....those will have even more taxes heaped on it....gun clubs will getg shut down for "environmental" concerns.....yadda, yadda, yadda

Gun Ban??, all mine were stolen last week officer?

Yup, or that damn boat capsized again, lost them all!

I don't worry too much about the whole gun confication thing. First of all, I really don't see it happening, secondly, if it does happen, there will be a civil war, even if it's me against the whole US goverment. Sorry, I'd rather die on my feet rather than live on my knees serving a socialist economic system that only serves the elitist. Well, we're close enough,, but at least I cas say what I want and protect myself.

Oh, and Private Sale issue. To buy privatly is OK, but just hope that gun wasn't stolen or used in a crime, so be sure of your sourse. To sell privatly, be sure you arn't selling to a criminal, because if the criminal then goes and commits a crime with that gun, it could come back on you. I would only sell to someone I knew well.
