Laboratory ballisticians use the microscopic defects in the bore to identify a particular barrel, rather than the gross structure. All production barrels from the same manufactorer will look identical until examined under a microscope. The minor pits and metal grain are the fingerprints that set a particular barrel and it's fired rounds apart.
