Police trainee accidentally killed by instructor

AUSTELL, Georgia (AP) -- A trainee at a state law enforcement academy was accidentally shot and killed by her instructor Tuesday during a classroom exercise, authorities said.

The police trainee was among about 30 students in the seventh week of a state-mandated 10-week training course at the North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy.

The recruit was not identified pending notification of relatives. Details of the accident also were not released Tuesday night.

Cobb County Police spokesman Dana Pierce said the veteran instructor was "very traumatized" and had to seek medical attention.

The academy is one of 10 regional training centers for law enforcement officers in Georgia.

Something tells me that the instructor was "the only person in this room, that I know of, who is qualified to carry this Glock .40..."

I would've ducked and rolled as soon as that gun was pointing at me... I hope it was at least a rifle because it's damn sure hard to get a handgun to go off unintentionally unless you are an idiot or holding a glock.

There was a similar case in the metro-Atlanta area a couple of years ago. Whether or not a Glock was used, the shooter really screwed up.

Very tragic and sad. I do wonder what exactly happened however. Similar incidents have happened before where real firearms have been used in training that were supposed to be unloaded.

Please hold off on politicizing this - Tara was a neighbor of mine, and one of the nicest people you'd ever meet. Her parents, brother, and sister - along with just about everyone else that knew her - are beside themselves right now. The news crews hovering around the neighborhood are bad enough...

Danger Dave, my sympathies for the loss of your friend. Truely a tragedy. May God be with her family in these trying times.

if it is not warranted here then where? it scares me to think these guys are out on the street with this kind of gray matter. this is one of several instances I have read about lately with cops using loaded weapons in training classes. downright scary.

sorry for the guy that knew the recruit. really.

but lets be real... all of the stuff that gets mocked on tfl is about someones friend or relative. should we be hands off when it is convenient?

Jeff,

If you're looking for a fight from me, or to go off on a tangent about this, then you're looking in the wrong place.

Right now, we need to learn from it, discuss the issue on why safety is paramount, and then if the issue is going to be a "Us vs. Them" thread, to start a new one and see where it goes.

It's not like us gun owners haven't been in the papers where an accident happend and someone died, and we did condemn the person, but we didn't start bashing all gun owners over it.

Now is not the time to start "dancing in the blood of LEO's" to prove a point. The anti's do this with us, and we are the first to use the :barf: sign when they do.

Right now, I'm just saying that respect for the people cut short in life is more important then going into a full blown finger pointing episode that will surely be closed.

not looking for a fight. perhaps you read too much emotion into my post. i was speaking in a matter of fact manner. you'll notice i usually say what i want and don't follow up once i have already stated my position. definately not interested in arguing.

but i am sure someone will pull into one some day. :D

Non-LEOs have *plenty* of accidents. My own view isn't that police are less safe than civilians with firearms, which seems to be where you are pointing. If you have any evidence at all support your postulate (and I mean statistical, not anecdotal), feel free to bring it up in *another* thread.

please read my post before commenting on what i didn't say. never said either police or civies are less safe. but police should be safer and more proficient with their weapons than joe civilian. that is part of their job isn't it.

there was a thread about a guy shooting someone he thought was a bear. everyone said he was stupid.

i say this cop is also stupid for:

pointing a weapon at someone-
being in a classroom environment wioth a loaded gun-

unfortunately his stupidity resulted in manslaughter. his incompetence cost a young woman her life.

this is the appropriate thread for my comments. some have tried to hijack it from it's original intent and turn it into a candle burning session.

bottom line is "reckless cop kills girl".

Would have it been somehow less significant if she were MY neighbor, or someone who wasn't as nice?

Of course the media vultures jumped all over this. If someone in a L.E. position screws up, the media goes into a damn frenzy. I've lost count of how many time John Q. Public around here has shot himself or someone else while he was "cleaning" his gun and it barely gets a paragraph in the paper.

When I was in rookie school, during training exercises with real firearms in the classroom, we were checked to make sure we didn't have any live rounds anywhere in the room. They said we'd go home to stay if we came in with live ammo.

Title and office do not matter, not one single bit. We are talking about a tool that makes holes in things from a distance. I dont care if you are the King of England, the President of the United States, a school teacher, Police officer, or whatever. Every person is responsible for their actions - follow the 4 rules.

So, no it is not the job of a police officer to be more proficient and safe with a weapon. That is something that is very much up to the individual to decide and then practice apropriately. More practice and training will make them more proficient with the weapon, allowing them better use of a tool that helps them do there job.

The issue here is that since there are not many details available regarding this situation we dont know what happened, beyond that it is a horrible tragedy. Both families and friends are suffering now that is all that matters.
