Man charged with shooting at officer, weapons cache found

A Wheeling man was arrested after he fired at a police officer early Tuesday morning, police said. A cache of weapons and ammunition including a grenade launcher, were found in the house, NBC5 reported today.

Gregory A. Banks, 43, of 496 Isa Drive in Wheeling, was charged with aggravated discharge and reckless discharge of a weapon.

Wheeling police, who received a call about a disturbance on Isa Drive shortly before 2 a.m., said an officer was getting out of his car at the address when he saw someone with a rifle leave the home and then go back inside.

Then, a rifle shot was fired from the residence, striking the ground just feet from where the officer was standing, police said.

The officer was unharmed and radioed for backup.

As additional officers arrived on the scene, they set up a perimeter around the house, police said.

Residents in the home surrendered to police and were taken into custody, police said.

In a search of the home, police recovered numerous weapons with ammunition and miscellaneous items.

At the scene of the shooting Tuesday afternoon, a “Danger No Trespassing” sign was clearly visible in front of Banks’ home.

A woman at the home declined to comment.

NBC5 reported today that inside the home, police found more than a dozen weapons, including a grenade launcher, assault rifles and handguns, according to Wheeling Police Deputy Chief John Stone.

The weapons were strewn throughout the home, some in plain view, Stone said. Police also found fireworks and fake law enforcement badges, he said. In Banks' vehicle, a S.W.A.T. uniform and other weapons were found, Stone said. Additional charges may be filed against Banks, who is not a law enforcement officer, he said.

NBC5 also reported that ATF agents were attempting to trace the weapons in a national database to determine whether they were obtained illegally, according to ATF Special Agent and spokesman Tom Ahern.

In addition to the 37 mm grenade launcher, police found four assault rifles, five semi-automatic handguns, and dozens of rounds of ammunition in Banks' home, Ahern told NBC5.

Several hunting knifes, night-vision goggles, a gas mask, disabling chemical spray, body armor and handcuffs also were found, he said.

All the weapons were functional, and federal investigators were conducting ballistic tests Tuesday night to determine if they had been fired recently, according to Ahern.

Confiscated from the home were two other assault rifles, the grenade launcher, a shotgun, five handguns, dozens of rounds of ammunition, handcuffs, police badges...

When one officer exited his squad car, he saw Banks, carrying an AK-47 rifle, exit the home and go back inside, Wheeling Police Deputy Chief John Stone said. A rifle shot was then fired, striking the ground a few feet from the officer, according to the release.

Banks told police he had the assault rifle out to scare his girlfriend, Stone said.
Clowns like this give soooooo much ammo to the anti crowd. They should allow public caning for idiots like this!!!!

A 37mm grenade launcher? No grenades of any sort found? Sounds like a flare/gas launcher to me. "SWAT uniform" probably means a t-shirt with "SWAT" on the back. Other than shooting at the police officer, what did this person do that was wrong?

"four assault rifles... five semi-automatic handguns... dozens of rounds of ammunition..."
The Horror!

"Several hunting knifes, night-vision goggles, a gas mask, disabling chemical spray, body armor and handcuffs"
so what?

Whoever shot at the cop was a nutcase for that reason. The rest of the crap was thrown into the article to generate knee-jerk reactions from soccer moms.

tyme summed it up nicely.

"dozens of rounds of ammo" OOO, impressive!

Some how I doubt this guy didn't own at least one revolver. I guess revolvers aren't scary enough.

"weapons cache found" I really like that one.

Millions of people in this country have "weapons caches". I love liberal wording.

four assault rifles... five semi-automatic handguns... dozens of rounds of ammunition....Several hunting knifes, night-vision goggles, a gas mask, disabling chemical spray, body armor and handcuffs.

Sounds like any place I know. Except the dozens of rounds. Its cheaper if you get 'em by the thousand.

what was he gonna do with "donzens of rounds"??

When someone's gun collection is written up by the media (generally when police confiscate it, for whatever reason), it becomes a "cache" or "arsenal."

If you only have one gun, it delays publication because the editor has to research evil-sounding alternatives for "handgun" or "rifle." News rags don't want to use the same term over and over. It doesn't sell well.

Two or more guns is risky; if Rove just leaked confidential information, or if Bush just nominated a replacement SCOTUS justice, a small gun collection might be reported as a cache or arsenal to save space and time. If it's a slow news day, though, the media will print something like, "...police are not sure why <suspect> had a high-capacity, automatic handgun and a high-power assault rifle in the same room, but neighbors said they were shocked to learn that beneath <suspect>'s veneer of friendliness, he was at heart a gun owner."

When police arrived, Officer James Theberge saw Banks holding a rifle in the yard, Stone said. He said Banks went inside the house and fired a shot from an AK-47 assault rifle. The shot hit the ground within a few feet of Theberge, Stone said.

Banks said the shot was fired by accident

Banks was aware that the officers had been called and admitted to raising the AK-47 into the air and firing it, Chandra said.

police also found three fake police badges, one that identified Banks as a member of a SWAT team, and two others that identified Banks as a weapons expert and a commander of security.

You ever notice that "ill fortune" just seems to follow some people?

Here's just a regular guy who needed to scare his girlfriend with a loaded rifle he can't control, and lives in a police inspired fantasy land, but now he's in all sorts of trouble - none of which could possibly be his fault. :D

Some people are just lightening rods due to their own stupidity. The shame here is that there is considered to be some association between this idiot and gun owners in general.

None of those items is in-and-of-itself illegal

anyone catch this:

"dozens of rounds of ammunition"

DOZENS!!!!!?!??!?!?!?!??

BWAAAHHAHHHAHAAAA!

Ooooooo. Scaaaary.

Well, we all know that any decent gun-owning citizen only ever carries one round of ammunition in the shirt pocket, for those scenarios where merely brandishing that old revolver won't scare off the bad guys.

Dozens of rounds are clearly the hallmark of a potential mass-murderer.

I believe some of you are missing a point. He shot to someone. Doesn't ever matter if it was a police-oficer. He shot!

Why care about what the media makes of it? Fact is that gun owners have a bad reputation all over the world. dummies like that guy are not helping. Be mad at him, not at a media who do not know any better.

Yes, the write about it, yes they make more out of some things then necessary. And yes, many times they are wrong. But in this case? Hope they lock him up for a long time.

I rather be mad at both. The media for being a biased ignorant pos that spreads lies and raises wanton accusations and the man for being a f'ing retard for shooting at a cop. Not to mention owning fake badges, unless those fake badges are those plastic toy ones that anyone can get with their name on it.... Hm..

I understand some peoples discontent with the representation of his "arsenal", but remember this guy is your ENEMY. He is fuel for the gun control fire. He was using an assault rifle to "scare" his girlfriend and he capped off a round at an officer doing his job. This guy shouldn't have an arsenal, from now on he shouldn't be allowed to own a weapon PERIOD. It's pretty simple: use a gun to "scare" a family member, shoot at the police and you forfeit your 2nd amend rights.

If he "fired at a police officer," where is the charge of attempted murder of a police officer? Why just reckless/aggravated discharge?

Something's not right.

I've always wondered
------------------------------------------------------------------------
How many guns=a cache?

How many guns=an arsenal?

I am pretty sure that leftists think that anything over "one 'sporting use' single-shot long rifle" constitutes an arsenal that you should not be allowed by the government to possess.

As if we can't be mad at BOTH?

I AM mad at him.

But I'm also mad at an unprofessional, sensationalist media. "Not knowing better" is not a legitimate excuse for the media, in this case or any other. Part of being a reporter or an editor is knowing how to do research, and knowing how to do unbiased reporting, writing and editing!

The terms "arsenal" and "cache" have certain connotations. They imply a number of guns significantly more than a single person "needs" or "justifies." (Collectors aside, of course.)
Millions of gun owners have the same number of guns as this guy, or at least within a few. Any editor who doesn't know that simple fact is ignorant to the point of being incompetent, and should not be editing stories about gun owners. So if an editor calls this guy's collection an "arsenal," and millions of other people have a similar number of guns, the story is essentially saying that millions of people have an above-average number of guns. Huh? The majority of gun owners have more guns than the average gun owner? Not even possible. Everyone can't be above average.

The editor in such a case should recuse himself until he knows more -- or better still, he should go out and LEARN about the subject so that he can do his job properly.

Stop excusing the media for "not knowing better." If your airline pilot encountered an engine-out emergency and then you crashed because he "didn't know better," you'd say, "If he's a pilot, I EXPECT him to 'know better.' " Why you would hold journalists to different standards, I don't understand.

He was using an assault rifle to "scare" his girlfriend...

So, you're okay with calling a semi-auto rifle an "assault rifle," hmm?

Any indication whatsoever that it was a select-fire weapon?

Who's our enemy? Here you are using the bogus terminology used by our enemies...

edit: Oh, I just noticed that you also seem comfortable referring to the guy's guns as an "arsenal" just like the media do. Why is that? Do you share the media's view that this guy had an inordinate amount of guns and ammunition? A dozen or so guns and "dozens of rounds of ammunition" is seen, obviously, as a problem by the writers and editors of this story.

What is your view, SCCop?
