Pocket Carry Revolver

Anyone know of a small revolver that can be used as CCW carried in the front pocket like a small semiauto. I'm looking for something less than 5 inches long, 4 inches high, 2 inches thick. The higher the caliber the better.

S&W lightweight Bodyguard

Light alloy frame

Shrouded hammer won't snag on clothing

.38 Special 135gr Gold Dots

Make sure you know how to carry that in the front pocket unless you have all the kids you want all ready. Been alot of men made themselves into women by not carrying it safely.:D

If you are going to pocket carry replace the rubber grips with wood
Rubber inhibit your draw significantly

That is why I want to go with a revolver. A DOA Semi auto with a round in the chamber just an inch away gives me "shrinkage" just thinking about it. I would even carry the revolver with the hammer on an empty chamber, and I know that most modern revolvers are safe, but I don't want to take any chances down there. it is either going to be a semi auto, without a round down the pipe, hopefully I can work the slide quick enough in an emergency, or a revolver. Problem is I got a job where standard dress is dress pants and a button down shirt (or a golf shirt) and NO Jacket. Its either pocket or ankle carry.

A S&W 642-2 or one of it's brothers should fix you right up.

Good Luck...

If you are going to pocket-carry, the Titanium cylinders make sense. Cost difference now that used guns are available is not such an issue. A 20% weight savings is significant. +1 for wood grips! My personal carry gun is an older, pre-lock 342. It just disappears into the pocket of a pair of Dockers. I use a leather pocket holster to keep it in position.

J frame Smiths are my preference. I'm really liking my 640, but I don't like the caliber. Sometimes I carry a bulldog with the barrel cut down even with the ejector rod in .44sp. I wish S&W made a little .44 that mimicked the J frame.

Like XB, I have the same vintage M38 in my pocket, but I have a set of rubber lasergrips on mine and load with 140gr Hornady XTPs.

S&W Model 38 in a Uncle Mike's #3 with 135gr Gold Dots

These are both excellent choices...

The older Model 38 is the same Bodyguard model.

XB just told us it is also alloy light...

The newer 642-2 is the hammerless Airweight (alloy)
The Airweight Bodyguard and the Model 38 give access to the hammer by merely shrouding it, instead of eliminating it altogether. ;)

Wooden grips are a very good idea...
However, there are different compounds of rubber grips, and tackiness varies, so don't rule out rubber grips altogether... :)
Mine are logoed with a P and a lion with a target

Probably Pachmeyer??
My memory ain't what it used to be... sorry, but I'm sure someone will tell us... and remind me. ;)

IMPORTANT

Use a pocket holster which keeps the gun in an upright position...

Uncle Mikes #3 is a nice one... It is suede finished on the outside and sticks to the inside of the pocket so it doesn't come out with the gun.

I have lined the legside of my pocket holster with a scissor cut sheet of thin, hard, plastic which further facilitates a smooth draw...

Works for me. ;)

The older Model 38 is the same Bodyguard model in steel.
Model 49 is blued steel framed.
Model 38 is aluminum alloy framed.
Model 649 is stainless steel framed.

I loaded up my beat-up Model 38 and loaded a Scandium framed J-frame and hefted one in each hand. I couldn't really discern a difference.

Thanks for the more accurate info...
I hadn't known they were making a lightweight that far back. :o

Don't rule out an IWB carry with a tuckable holster------desantis "Tuck This" is a fairly inexpensive tuckable IWB style holster--this way you could carry something like a smaller 9mm auto and not be limited to a revolver. Just depends on what type of body frame you have and if you can pass off the IWB holster. Something to think about.

+1 for the bodyguard.
I use a safariland pocket holster. It is smooth plastic on the inside and a suede like material on the outside. The gun slides right out.

I got my mom a S&W 637 in .38 and it is a great little gun. The DA trigger pull is fairly stiff, but the SA pull is great. As far as size goes, I can put it in the back pocket of a pair of my jeans and only a small portion of the grip sticks out. I have read a few complaints about the finish coming off but I have had no problems with that. From what I can tell just don't use Gunscrubber or other harsh cleaners on it.

Re Pocketgun

Hi
I have a S&W 642 .38 that rides in a Galco pocket holster. Great combo. If you are sold on pocket carry get a shrouded hammer model. Some are DAO like mine others like the Model38 shown on another reply can be fired SA also. I know the S&W model 38 is an older one I am not sure what the new model number is. The shrouded models allow you the option of firing from within the pocket if the need arises. Good luck.

38 bodyguard. pre-j magnum frame change is sweet for that purpose. Second choice would be a newer 638 or 442/642. Slightly larger but just as light.

Tacoma

38 bodyguard. pre-j magnum frame change

Is that a steel or alloy lightweight?

I would love my Bodyguard even more if it could shoot .357 as an alternate...
but with the new 135gr Gold Dots I wonder if it's necessary.

As GreenEggsandHam said .44 Special would be even better... :D
