Please weigh in--do you trust these clones with your life?

Your chances of a totally reliable piece with these particular clones are going to be much lower than with a Springfield or Kimber, but that doesn't mean you can't find one. If you do spend the money on one of these, then make sure it can at least go 200 rounds without 1 glitch with your choice ammo. If so, then you're fine.

As far as the EAA, my cousin owns one in .45. It's perfectly reliable and doesn't feel too bad in the hands. Very much like a CZ in feel.

I own a Astra A 100 and am very pleased with it.Accurate and no jams.I have a friend that has built a lot of the norinco 1911 clones. He has been building 1911's for 30 years and claims the steel in them are as good as colt and so is the interior finish work.I think either would work for you.My opinon but I am begining to think think too many people are thinking that if it doesn't cost a mint it is't any good.Thats not true and colt is proof of this.Man am I going to catch it with that statement.Another gun that works well is a CZ 52.Lots of power with good reliability. The 7.62 by 25 is an old round.Whatever you buy good luck.
Bob

After handling one today and looking over the prices around the web, I've got my heart set on an EAA in the "Wonder Finish." I'm still not perfectly sure of caliber but I do think I'll be much happier with this than any of the aforementioned clones.

At the risk of being a bit redundant here--there are a lot of guns that do not make the grade as serious tools, and the gun magazines are full of them. The simplest solution is to go with something with a long, successful track record in the real world. If cost is a factor, a police trade in M10 is a fine gun and I could get along perfectly well with one. Just because my safe is cluttered with other fine guns doesn't make it a bad choice. My daughter happened to like the Glock M19 and was willing to invest the time and effort to learn it well--so that's what I bought her. It could as easily been a Ruger SP-101 or SIG 228. Quite frankly, the gun is just a bullet launcher, and all you want is one that works for you--every time. You can spend from $150 to $1500 and the results are going to be about the same. In my experience the $150 guns have actually been better. Training and personal mindset matter a great deal more. Ed McGivern and Jim Cirillo showed what a M10 in the right hands can do, and it was impressive indeed...

I have been entirely pleased with the FEG and FM HP clones and I have heard nothing but good things about the Norinco "Pistol of 1911"
It really isnt a question of what is your life worth, since for the most part you are seeking peace of mind.
If it were a matter of the value you place on your life, wouldn't we be spending MILLIONS? I know I would.
Of course you must decide for yourself.

What are you giving this guy mis-information for? Paxil doesn't cut it! Try Prozac. And get the 1991. if you promise to test fire it before you carry it. Then, just relax and have erotic dreams about Terri Garr.

I have an AO 1911-45.Would I trust my life
with it?YES.I also have a S&W Mod 10 in 38
S&W.Again YES.I can hit center of mass at 50
yards(nice group too)with my AO all day long
with whatever I feed it.We all know a Mod 10
M&P works.Just old style guns thats all.

I like the Thunder 380 from Bersa and the Series 95. Also, the FEG Walther clone had several good reviews for being totally reiable. Idon't know about the FEG HP clone though.

Use wisely your power of choice,
Ben

To be honest, I don't feel comfortable with using .380, especially for a home gun when I can afford size and weight. I thought about the FEG copy of the Walther PPK for my fiancee but the recoil spring is too tight for her--she couldn't rack the slide on the one she handled. It seemed OK to me and I think she may just have been handling it with kid gloves, but then again I work on grip strength pretty often so maybe she was right. I may bring it up again as she gets more confident with guns as that seemed to be her runaway first choice except for the slide.

Any of those you listed would get me through the night if nothing else was available.

If I didn't want to spend a lot of money, I'd look to the S&W Mod 10 series or a milspec SA .45. Either one will do the job without investing anything else.

I have a 1911 that is a Federal ordnance frame with a GI slide on top and adjustable trigger. it shoots great with no problems. And i have two Star9mm model A's which shoot the 9mm Largo. shoot great also. like someone else posted, sometimes cheap guns work as good as expensive ones. Yes, in rrevolbvers, the smooth Model 10 with plus p loads is a cheap ,but effective handgun. You can save money and buy more ammo!

I`d take a Ruger P-95 over any of the foreign clones listed. I`ve had some Astras etc. that worked okay but other had serious metalurgy problems (too soft) and quality control seems to be more spotty than the big US makers. You can pick up a P-95 around here for like $300. If you want a .45 go for the P-97,it`s more expensive +/- $350 but it`s a heck of a lot of gun for the money. FWIW mine`s one of the most accurate service autos I`ve ever fired and 100% reliable. Marcus

Gwinny,
I would also like to add the Ruger P90 and the Taurus PT-945 if you are looking into big bore autos. My youngest brother bought a PT-945 and I played around with it a bit. Good trigger and action, good sights, ambidextruous controls, nice weight and size (reminds me of a double action Commander) and can be carried cocked and locked. Plus there is that lifetime warranty on any Taurus that I have seen honored time and again over the years, even with a used weapon. I think that is very important, as every manufacturer I know of has built a dud or two. I have seen much better service from Taurus in this regard than from Colt, Smith & Wesson, Beretta or SIG Sauer.
I would also like to second the advice on the revolvers, though I personally do not like being limited to a .38 when .357 Magnums are so readily available. To me good choices have been the S&W model 586, the Ruger GP 100 and the Taurus 669. I have Glocks, Colt autos, Taurus autos, Springfield autos and carry a SIG P226 .357 on duty but I still have more faith in my old S&W 586 that was recently retired. A good double action revolver can be used for anything due to being able to digest varied loads and is a lot cheaper. Too many people go out and buy a $500 gun and practice with $50 of ammo rather than a $200 gun with $350 worth of practice ammo. They may not be the "latest and greatest" in the gun magazines but they have been doing yeoman duty in the line of fire for a long, long time.

Good luck and God bless all,
Paladin

I'll go along w/ Bert on the AO. As I stated in another thread, I've shoot many a round through this pistol, and other than having the trigger slickedup and a little self polishing on the ramp, and a ambi. saftey, that's all thats the work that has been done on it. Would I trust my life w/ it? I have, and will continue to.FWIW
