Hello all,
Was at my LGS today and saw one in very good condition for @ 350.00 out the door with box and a leather holster. Since I am not too knowledable in revolvers I am asking the guru's on the board. Its a .357 btw.

I put a 24 hour hold on it just in case its worth owning.

Regards to all

Blue Stainless? .38 Special or .357?

Depending on condition, it would be a good price for a stainless .357. A decent price for a blue .38. Really a good old reliable gun. The old Six series Rugers are going up in price. Look at the prices for a Smith Model 10/64/13/65 for comparison and realize Ruger made ALOT less of those guns than Smith did.

I MUCH prefer my Service Six (stainless) to the Security Six. It's not the adjustable sights on the Security Six I don't like, but the higher top strap that totally ruins the lines of a nice gun. The Service Six is the gun a S&W 66 should have been. K frame size and weight, no full under lug barrel, and able to withstand .357 MUCH better. Will also fit in the same holster as a S&W K frame. Only improvement I made (and heartily recommend) is buying the new old stock Ruger target grips. The skinny grips on the Six series don't do it for me.

Yep they are real good guns!

My Service Six .357,on the right, cost me just a bit over $400.

I highly recommend them. But if you can find a Speed Six... that's even better.

I guess your LGS missed the "Ruger Six Series Guns Achieve Colt Status" memo, judging by the low asking price.

Either that or the gun is sick and has problems.

Run it through the checkout posted @ the top of the forum & if it passes, jump on that deal with both feet.

(I really despise Ruger triggers, but, I have to give the devil his due.)

The "Six" series predates the GP.
It was Ruger's first foray into the double action market.
They wanted a D/A as strong as the Blackhawk (read that as stronger than either a Colt or S&W in that size range.)

It was meant to capture the police market, but, that market was moving towards the 9mm and a semi auto.

What Ruger put out was a very strong and pretty accurate revolver @ a price point well below the competition.
The only reason Ruger stopped making them was a cost issue.
Ruger can make the SP and the GP cheaper.

If the gun is "clean" and passes the checkout, then $350 is a very fair price for it.
Good guns. (<-- from someone that really has no use or love for Ruger D/A revolvers)

I would buy that real quick if the gun is in good working condition. A stainless .357 six-series in good condition goes for much more in my area and that is without box/accessories. I think it is a very good price for a very good gun (if it is in good condition).

I don't worry about buying from them because they give you 30 days no questions asked to return it if you don't like it. They won't give you back the money but will allow you to use the full amount towards a different used or new gun or anything else in the store.

tough

I've posted before that shoot to failure tests at a big academy yielded the "Six series" the toughest "K-type" medium frames going at the time....this before the arrival of the L-frame.

I do not see that many used, and as stated, all I have seen were overpriced.

Hey guys is there a picking order when it comes down to the six series guns?
Which one rates on top? Is the service six more desirable than the security six for example.

Regards

It's a shame Ruger discontinued such a fine revolver

Nothing wrong with the GP-100, but the six series are worth the effort to locate.

Most would say the security six is top dog in the 4" barrel, while the Speed Six is the best for a 2.5". I prefer the Service Six in 4" stainless over the Security Six. I never needed adjustable sights and the slightly beefier top strap on the Security Six just ruins the lines of the gun. I replaced the skinny factory grips for factory targets which cost me $10 new 2 years ago.

BTW, I did purchase this one and will post pictures once I pick it up from the not so local gun broker. Actually about 40 miles from me. So sometime next week.
