Please, Opinions needed on H&K P30

The tests that MAC has been doing recently arent all that extreme

Extreme is a relative term, just as a counter point I would say his tests are far out of the ordinary, way far out. If you think about it when a pistol is on your person there is an overwhelming probability that it will be in one of two positions. Either in your hand or in a holster, neither one really supports a good chance it might land in a pile of mud or sand horizontally. Neither certainly support a hypothesis where it lands in either and get's pushed down into the media. Extreme is a relative term.

First 9x19 I ever fired was a P30L V3, if I recall it's features correctly.

Great gun, I have big hands for my age and other measurements, but it worked pretty much perfect for point shooting back then, almost four years ago.

That said for carry the grip apparently can mar or ruin non-machine wash overcoats and such if you don't have a layer between that and the overcoat, such as a cotton t-shirt. And the P30L is fine for OWB and Hip carry (The L models were designed so that HK could get police contracts in Europe.) but the barrel length makes it not very well suited to IWB in general. The P2000 or USPc in 9, .357 or .40 might suit your wishes about as well or better depending on your preferences for ergonomics and such.

The best thing the MAC tests show is even the most reliable pistols will choke (Glock 17/SIG P226). You have to be ready to clear them, smack them into battery, grip a magazine and rip it out hard etc.

The tests are a bit extreme and that's ok. I think they do show some weaknesses or modes of possible failure with a given platform and knowing what to expect helps prepare for how to handle it.

None of the guns I saw him do were ever taken out of the fight so to speak.

Hell I think the most reliable gun I can imagine is probably Pistolet Makarov. I think those damn things can be soaked in a volcano and still run. Doesn't make it the best choice for me though.

The PPQ trigger is however FAR AND AWAY better then any P30 variant and better then the VP9. I do think the P30 makes a better hard use (combat if you will) gun.

Like tunnel rat though I think the P2000 is the sweet spot and most versatile.

Then again there are a whole bunch of people who will swear the USP is a much better "hard use" pistol than all four of those dogs. :)

One other data point for you. I personally have found most HKs, contrary to popular belief need a short break in and may fail early on. I have found running some heavier/hotter ammo and a fair bit of dry fire breaks them in and settles them down markedly. Again only my personal experience.

I would say the USP .45 is the hardest use pistol HK ever designed it uses so much DNA from the Mark 23 which may have been the worlds most overbuilt pistol ever.

But at the end of the day it's like arguing which is faster a Porsche 918 or a La Ferrari. The answer is YES.

I just realized. We have gone two pages and failed to follow rule 37, subsection 17, Paragraph 12 of the gun nut forum handbook.

I will rectify this right now so we can move one.

"Just get a Glock preferably a 17 or 19"

That was a close one. Ok. Now you can all go back to discussing the P30/PPQ. ;)

I EDC a Walther PPS and own an HK VP9 and HK USP Compact.

First, I'll say HK IS worth the money. The quality, fit, and finish are superb.

Second, I'll say my Walther has given me 2.5 perfect years of great carry and flawless performance.

Feel 'em up, then buy the one that feels best. :)

Code:
My brother has a VP9, and i shot a few mags with it, i didn't shoot it very well, and didnt like the trigger. the grips were set for my brothers larger hands, and this may have effected my accuracy, i shot it alongside my .40 PPQ and shot my walther much better.

The trigger with the short reset is what sold me on the PPQ;)

You have the right idea on shooting them both and the one that feels the best and shoots the best is the one to get. Keep us informed on which you went with:cool:

MY P30L:
Sharp grip texturing and wears quick
Trigger reset is long
Feels chuncky

My PPQ:
Feels less robust in the trigger, but has a better trigger

So i just got back from putting 150rds of aguila 124gr 9mm through a H&K P30 Da/Sa with safety, i dont like the trigger, so it looks like i will be going with what i truely like and miss, the PPQ.

Now i just to save up the dough, i am about a quarter of the way there, will probably have to wait until income tax time

I've owned a P30L (9MM) for about 4 years now. Loved everything about this gun with the exception of the trigger. I cured that issue about 2 years ago by ordering a few springs from HKparts.net and replacing the original springs in the pistol. Both SA and DA pull were reduced with zero misfire issues. This was the right choice for me, YMMV.

Here's what you need to do to solve the HK V3 trigger variant "heavy" DA trigger pull woes;

A) Get the LEM variant instead & sort out the springs to get the weighted trigger pull you want;

http://www.hkpro.com/forum/hk-refer...er-chart.html#/topics/140436?page=1&_k=w514ry

B) Ignore the HK V3 "heavy" DA trigger since a decocked non "S" V3 really is a clever and safe means to carry, i.e., quit your sniveling and practice thumb-cocking the HK V3 P30 out of the holster so you're always shooting SA

C) Glock 19 and / or Walther PPS M2 until, or instead of, trying to figure out A) or B)

That's either some very brilliant or really twisted logic right there!
