Please Help me pick a "deer" gun

As far as cleaning goes your just going to have to do it. Get some Wipeout, Gunoil/Kroil, patches, cleaning rod, jag, brush, silicone gun cloth, and a cheap bore guide. Follow the directions on the can of Wipeout, follow with a patch of gun oil, and wipe down the outside wiht the silicone gun cloth and you have spent about 20 minutes cleaning your rifle.

I do think walmart is the devil but I will go check it out. maybe my LGS can get it also.

Your LGS can get it for you, what they can't do is sell it at Wal-Mart prices. The cheapest place to buy new rifles will be Wal-Mart or other big box store as they can buy in the volume and offer discounts the LGS can't.

samsmix I have a Remingtion model 1917 in 30-06, that would do good. after looking at the pricing on them I am now a little afraid to use it out in the brush. It is the reason I am looking for 30-06, only one ammo to buy.

Is your 1917 sporterized or original? If it is sporterized I'd save your money and just hunt with it. If it is original you can still hunt with it, it will just be heavy to lug around. Don't be afraid to use it those rifles are tough and I doubt you'll decrease the value of it by hunting with it. Right now I know where there are two nicely sporterized 1903 Springfields in town that are selling between $250-300 with no scope.

If I were you I'd look used as well. Check the local pawn shops and classifieds. Armslist is a good source for local firearms as well. Then you have the online auction sites like Gunbroker and AuctionArms, as well as Guns America.

Use that M1917, you can't hurt it unless you drag it behind your truck down forty miles of gravel road. You can get a no Drill&Tap scope mount from B-square for it, hang a old 6X Weaver steel tube on it and it well look like a vintage sniper and be more than accurate enough for deer.

Otherwise I'd go with a Savage rifle/scope combo package.

But this one needs to be 30-06

You may want it to be a 30-06 and I have no problems with that but it doesn't NEED to be one.

I'll throw in another vote for the Savage 110 package. It won't be sighted in (none will be from the factory) and the scope is more than likely crap but it will probably be serviceable at least for the time being.

You will not find a new stainless bolt gun and scope for $450, your stuck with blued metal and tupperwear stock. By all reports the Edge is a serviceable gun (and about 100 times better than the Rem 710 you had) but I don't like em. See if you can find a Stevens 200 for a low end gun and if not the Marlin XL7's and Savage 110's are your best bet. Also had good luck with the Weatherby Vangards and the T/C Venture but they'll be a little above your budget.

Best bet is to find a gun show and buy a used rifle that doesn't say Remington 710 or 770 or Mossberg. There are literally millions of used .30-06's floating around.

But for starters and by your obvious lack of knowlege on the rifle front I recommend a .22lr.

No it really has to be a 30-06, I was annoyed every time I looked at the 300 for the fact that I had to buy two different boxes of ammo.

I do have several 22lr's a marlin lever, a pump, a 10/22, 2 very old single shot bolts, I think there is a marlin auto in there also, have not touched it in a while.

I understand how walmart works but I support it as little as possible, would rether give my LGS $50 more if need be. Support your local business as much as possible.

I did hit the local guys this morning. the mossburg 4x4 felt good. the Remington's were just nasty, a real loose bolt on them. there was one savage 110, stock was a bit beat up but $275 out the door with scope. A very nice browning auto with a big scope but $850.

There is another store on the way home that I will check out he keeps a lot of new and used.

What about the used savage 110 for $275? It already has a scope? If the stocks beat up it might just be from lugging it around the woods. Just have the gunshop employee show you it's in good shape internaly before you buy it. And do a quick research on what to look for. I look for rust/pitting, check the barrel crown for dings that could affect accuracy, take the bolt out and look into the chamber and barrel with a light. Cycle the bolt and dry fire it. If it's a wood stock look along the barrel chanel for warping that could affect accuracy. Make sure the scope is clear and usable and that somebody didn't slap a rimfire scope on it or something just to sell it with a scope. But $275 sounds like a good deal and it would leave you with money to buy ammo, deer tags, range trips, etc. Good luck!

I am going back to the first shop with the savage in the morning, may end up with that 110. The scope was a bit lower end but would work for a while or it is low enough that I can go ahead and replace it.

Seen the Marlin xl7, and the trigger on that is awsome, so very light.

shot it a few times this afternoon. Managed to hit a can at the other side of the yard. the scope is a Redfield Looks like it is a nice scope.

trigger is real heavy but still very usable.

all in all I am happy, got it a box of ammo and still have $20 left.

I have a two acre rectange plot in the "sticks".

I could not see the can's just looking, but my eyes are real bad. a guess would be 300 ft.

Very cool Hades. The Redfields are decent scopes. If you end up wanting a nicer trigger down the road or any other upgrade you have tons of aftermarket options for the Savage 110. Sounds like you got a good deal!

The mossberg 4x4

If you havent already purchased something............
I just picked up my Mossberg 4x4 in a 22-250.

I couldnt be happier!!!! This rifle is AWESOME!!!! I was looking for a cheap good coyote rifle. I looked at the savage axis, marlin x7vh and the mossberg 4x4. And chose the mossberg. Being a fan of the savage, I was leaning toward the axis. The axis is just an ugly rifle and in my opinion, less than basic. Handled one and really didn't like the feel. I originally tried to get my hands on the marlin because I like the heavy long barrel, but because of it being so new, it was never available to buy or order. So my heart was set on the mossberg because of all its bells and whistles. My first day out with a half hearted sight in job I was picking off 2 liter Mt dew water bottles (at 200yrds) without even trying. Being impressed with my purchase, I took her to the range to see what else she could do. My best group at 100 yrds was unders a DIME!! not a quarter, a dime!! I didn't even shoot reloads or high dollar ammo, it was just good ol fashioned white box wal mart winchester bulk 45 gr varmint ammo.

This is what it can do at 100yrds

With 3 rounds left i figured what the heck, lets see what she does at 200 yrds. The dime in both pics is the same dime. I had a flyer a few inches off on the 200 yrd target, but am still very impressed!!

Overall the rifle has a unique look. I liked it over the savage axis even though I am more of a savage fan. For the money, you cant beat it. The stock is not a high dollar stock, but not as flimsy as the savage stock. I do like the look of it though. The vents on the forend do function and the barrel is free floating. The muzzle break on an already loud 22-250 is a bit of an ear ringer but taking it off and replacing it with the thread saver it comes with, seemed to help. Doesnt look as wicked though. The 1:10" twist is the tightest of the three rifles and from the shooting results, apparently does the trick. Im going to try some 55gr vmax that I have loaded later. The fluted barrel does cool VERY quickly and the action is just as smooth if not smoother than the savage. With the high cheek piece, it is very comfortable to shoot and is very fast to get on when hunting. The finish is not a high quality gloss or anything fancy, but I am going to camo dip mine anyway so for me thats not an issue. Hope this helps anyone looking.
