Please Help me pick a "deer" gun

I had a Remington 710 in 300 Win Mag. a cousin wanted it so I sold it.

I have $300 from the sale of it, and can add up to 150, so the budget is 450.

What I want 30-06, pre mounted and sighted scope,

I am **** poor at cleaning so I am thinking SS so I don't have to worry about rust. please offer your thoughts on this.

This gun will most of the time hold down the mat in my gun safe. I may one day try to get a deer, maybe. I every year or two will shoot at cans with it.

Thanks for any and all thoughts and suggestions.

You still have to clean ss barrels. The carbon and copper fouling occurs in any barrel type and if you don't clean it at least after a range session your pressures will start to build up and accuracy will be gone. ss only is less apt to rust.

Look at the new Ruger American when it comes out this month. Should be a winner for the money.

Well... for the kind of gun you are looking for, just about anything from Savage/Stevens, Mossberg, Marlin, Remington, or any other major maker will do, BUT: there is no such thing as a pre-sighted scope. If you have not shot it in, it will be a game crippling piece of you-know-what. On deer, take any caliber from .243 to .300, with .25-06 & .270 being about right.

If you will be shooting at less than 200yards, try harvesting a few deer with military surplus guns. Mosin-Nagants are cheap and plentiful, while odd guns like Ljungemanns, Tokarevs, Vz-52s and Schmidt-Rubins are their own special brand of fun.

If you go Mosin, remember the Ruskies sighted them in with the bayonets on. Removing a little metal under the front sight will cure the problem.

Get a mossberg 100 ATR in 30-06 and keep some money. Its black on black tho. I bought one for a 4x4 gun but now I use it all the time. Look at them on gunbroker.....

Stainless means it stains less, not that it doesn't stain at all ..... ya still gots to clean it.

There are Savage Axis Combos on sale right now at Cabela's for $350, thru the 29th..... in .30-06, with scope .... they'll boresight it for free, but you need to sight it in with the ammo you will use to hunt..

Tikka, Savage or Marlin. 308, 30-06 or 270 if you buy factory foder and 6.5x55 if you handload. I LOVE my T3 Stainless 6.5x55 it really is a dream gun. Tikka rifle $408, nikon prostaff BDC $155, codwell bipod $60, supersling $35, perfect hunting rifle......priceless :)

Or for right under $400 you can go get the Savage Model 10/110 at Walmart with the accu trigger and a package deal scope. It's $387 at our local Walmart, and $397 at the on up the road. It's also offered in a variety of calibers. IMO this is the way to go, and a much better deal than the Axis for $350.

Plenty of great rifles can be had for that price, but do not count on any rifle that is scoped to be sighted in.
If it was me, I'd watch the classifieds for a good Remington or savage that is lightly used and scoped. Never know what you might find.

I you want to buy new I would say Savage 110. I think it's a better rifle than most if the other new guns in the same price range. But I would buy a rifle without the scope and add your own. A Mueller or Sightron S1 will be inexpensive and last too. The Simmons that came on my last package gun lasted like 5 shots before the objective lens went down range.

I like the look of this one. does it have a box mag or just load from the top?

I do think walmart is the devil but I will go check it out. maybe my LGS can get it also.

samsmix I have a Remingtion model 1917 in 30-06, that would do good. after looking at the pricing on them I am now a little afraid to use it out in the brush. It is the reason I am looking for 30-06, only one ammo to buy.

The Marlin XL7 looks good also.

I would like one setup with a scope cause last time I tried to set a scope the result was less then ideal. and in my area gunsmithing seems to be a dieing art. took me 3 days to find someone to clean a pistol for me.

Keep the thoughts comming and maybe I will shake this cold enough to get out and go shopping some tomorrow.

I like the 30-30 and will want one again one of these days. Really like lever guns.

But this one needs to be 30-06

Any decent bolt action in .308 would be a good flexible choice. Find something with iron sights as well as being scope ready. JMHO
