Please help me choose 2 handguns!

Ruger GP 100 and S&W M&P45, but they might be closer to $1200, unless you find a really good deal. All American made quality firearms.

comn-cents - thank you. Rugers would go nicely with my 9mm Ruger and I love the made in USA part. Not familiar with Springfields but will definitely give em a look.

azredhawk44 - really excellent advice. Gave me alot to think about. Since I'm a new owner of guns, I haven't really developed much discrimination yet so I do plan on looking (touching) at as many as I can to choose. THanks also for the tips on what not to get, I have to admit Taurus looks good but not familiar with the quality. Thanks a million!

dont let people scare you away from taurus, its pretty much just the gun to pick on by most gun owners, mostly due to old problems, and issues with sending the gun back to get worked on and it taking too long. but i personally love taurus revolvers, i have 2, a judge and a ultralite snub .38 special. and in the market for a .357 tracker model. I dont have very much experience w/ their semiautos, but my girl's dad swears by them, and he has quite a collection of all makes and models, and has had his tauruses the longest. and my cousin also swears by his millenium pro in .40(very nice pistol, and a joy to shoot).

but as some have said you might want to focus on just one gun for $1000...and just go all out on it, because its an investment. so like others have mentioned i'd go for a glock or xd, but if you want to get fancy then i'd say go for a kimber 1911 w/ a 3 or 4" barrel, should be nice for concealed carry, plus it'll have a safety, and you can get some models w/ crimson trace grips, i've heard of people finding new kimbers for just over $800, but the msrp on their website tends to be more in the $1000-1300 range, so shop around. but in my oppinion they are the best looking 1911s on the market and many swear by them, but once again there are a few haters, like with taurus.

good luck on your purchase

Thanks again for the additional help everyone. I went to a show this weekend and handled alot of pistols (even though most dealers had the same guns from booth to booth).
I have decided to go with a S&W .357 (several model #s but basically the 2" barrel models- they felt the best, the quality was obvious over other brands. I looked at a 686)
For the .45ACP, I handled alot of 1911s but they are too big to conceal for me but I fell in love with the Springfield XD 45 4" barrel 13-round magazines - really fit like a glove and a nice size to carry.

And I think I can get very close to my budget with these two.

Again, I really appreciate the great advice from experienced gun owners as I am new to it and value an experienced opinion.

I'd look for a Ruger SP101 and then a Rock Island Armory 1911. Get both for under $1000. Knock the RIA, but mine is dependable as hell.

I bought my guns:

The gun show I went to was lame even with over 600 booths, the best booth was from my local dealer!

for a .357 mag, I went to his shop looked at Rugers, Taurus, etc but I really liked the S&W - I looked at a model 686 and an M60 - they were nice but didn't fit me perfectly. I wasn't looking for used, but he showed me a S&W, looked barely fired and it fit like a glove.
So, I bought it - a Model 19-4 .357/.38 - 2&1/2" Nickel Plated

For my .45 ACP, I went with the one that really fit like a glove and was the right size to CC - a Springfield XD-45 4".

Looking forward to my waiting period to be over and get them this weekend or Monday.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! Now I just have to find ammo!
