Pleasantly surprised: Taurus

I started carrying my mom's Taurus M85 IWB. It is a 1988 model stainless and heavier than say an Airweight. I normally carry a Glock 26 IWB. The snub .38 is more comfortable and easier to pull as the whole thing rides considerably higher even with a similar holster. Doesn't feel as heavy or bulky as the 26 either. May have to steal this thing from her! Accurate and has a good trigger too. Not a Taurus fan, but did have to throw that info in to the constant questions about the brand. I like it.

I shot a co-workers Taurus 605 snubby today and really liked it. First Taurus I've ever shot and the trigger was nice (comparable to my Rugers on both DA & SA with trigger jobs), it was fairly accurate and lockup was tight.....overall a smooth, pleasant shooter. Granted, we only had some standard pressure .38spls but I liked it.

I'm picking up a 905 in a week or two when I get my tax money back. :)

From everything I've heard, most Taurus semi's are decent weapons. I've fired a few... I would own one if I got a smoking deal. IMO, you can usually get a better weapon for close to the same price that you pay for a Taurus (see Ruger).

nothing wrong with taurus. if you managed to catch the latest episode of this seasons Swamp People, youll notice that the revolver liz uses to kill the gator they go swimming with in the canal is a .... Taurus tracker 22 magnum with the nice vent rib barrel. yeah not exactly the caliber id tote, but you need to realize these gals deal with nasty critters and can afford to have a 1200 dollar sw/freedom arms in any caliber they could choose, but they choose a taurus. that kinda says something.

Glad you found a gun that works so well for you. Now I suppose you'll have to go out and find one for yourself, just follow the revolver checkout procedure in the revolver forum whether you are buying new or used, and you'll be GTG.

If you like the steel M85, you might also like steel S&W J Frames, so you'll have to give them a look too. The SP101 is nice as well, though it is a bit fatter than the 85 and I find the triggers on most to be on the rough side.

I only own one Taurus right now, but it is a keeper. I just got an IWB holster for it yesterday, so I just might carry it today.

Model 431, 5 shot .44 Special, 3" barrel, made in 1993, paid $268 for it last year :) .

The 85 seems to be one of the more solid guns Taurus makes. I think they make some very attractive revolvers but all the ones I owned could have used a little more Q.C time.

Hoyat, I owned a 605 (bobbed hammer) and aside from a from a cylinder latch issue that my LGS fixed, it was a pretty solid revolver. For my 22nd birthday I was given a Taurus 650 that was also a great gun and after a bit of locktite, it was flawless. I sometimes regret selling it.

WHAT? Did I read this thread right??? Someone actually has something GOOD to say about a Taurus???? :D

I've seen 'em, handled a couple, but honestly have never shot one. It's nice to see a thread where someone likes their weapon and isn't afraid to say so! The ones I handled and looked at seemed to be nice and I didn't see any problems with them. Glad to hear you like yours and it's "fitting the bill" for your needs. Thanks for posting a "positive" thread! :)

The flames have GOT to start soon... ;)

Seriously, though, I love my Tauruses. I don't have an 85, but I do have a 605, 617, and a Raging Bull.

otoh, I also love my S&W 329, Ruger Alaskan, Ruger Security Six, Glocks, Colts, ... I just love my guns!

I only have one Taurus. A Judge Public Defender Poly. Very satisfied with the accuracy, reliability, performance, and appearance. I'm seriously thinking about getting a 992 4" Stainless 22LR/22MAG in the near future.

Taurus 85, 605 & 617, have all proven to be reliable and you won't hear complaints about them. The advantage of the 617 is it is a 7-shot and can get the ribber grips, which reduce recoil quite a bit.

I have added my first 2 Taurus to my line up within the last couple of months.

Judge Public Defender
TCP 738 (380)

very pleased with both. Both have about 400 rounds through them and have not had any issues. Both seem to be very well made and the price was great on both.

New judge ($379)
New TCP ($199)

The TCP has a better feel in my hand than its 2 main competitors (Ruger & Kel tec) and also has the slide lock back on last round that the other 2 do not.

I deffiantely have no problems buying another Taurus

I own the exact same gun that Liz was using in the last episode of Swamp People. Stainless Taurus Tracker .22 Magnum with 6" + barrel. Smooth trigger pull, locks up good and tight, deadly accurate and finish is flawless. Shoots like a dream! Great looking gun too, love the vent rib barrel.

So here it is. She's back in town and I don't want to give it back!

Hmm. That is an older one. My late '80s vintage Model 66 had that screw up by the rear sight.

My recollection is that those were a bit tricker to get back together than the current Taurus revolvers.
