well?
which one?

marlin has a scope, and holds 15 rds, versus the 10 shots of the 10/22.
then again, the 10/22 has more parts available for mod's.

whaddya think?
both are going for about the same price.

of course, theres always this savage bolt action for less than 100 bucks...

Ask yourself how often the mag capacity will really affect you. Ask if you really need a scope.

Then consider that my 10/22 is almost 20 years old and has NEVER given me a moment's trouble. With the stock iron sights, I can whack a coke can at 50 yards all day long.

I've never owned the Marlin, but I can say that if you do choose the Ruger, you will get one sweet handling and reliable .22.

get the ruger...I know at least im going to get one soon. the 10/22 comes with a 10 rnd clip but you can buy mags up to 50 and even more rnds. the marlin probably comes with a crappy scope anyways. I also think it'd be better to hone in on your skills with iron sights. scopes are a piece of cake. there are also more accesories for 10/22 versus the marlin...and i've never heard a bad thing about the 10/22. I hear it's recommendation all the time.

i understand what your saying...
i could get one of each for around 250 or so.

i just love the 60. ive wanted one since i was about 8.

yep,i think ill go with both of em.

i dont really need the scope, but my eyesight sucks big time, even with contacts.its hard to see the sights. ill probably keep the 10/22 stock for a while, and put a scope on the 60.

i have a M60 SS

man is it sweet and the best part is it is NOT a ruger

Bill Ruger aint no patriot

I have a 10/22 and a Marlin 795----the Marlin is OK but it is nowhere near the rifle the 10/22 is. And I like Marlins--- I also have a 336CS and have an 882ss on lay-a-way. But for autoloaders the 10/22 is the way to go. You can always put a cheap scope on it.

PS---how much are 10/22's there??? I can pick one up here for $139 for the standard model.

rugerfreak,
the 10/22 here runs for about 150. im shopping around though. im fairly sure i can find one for less.

gonna vote for........

Marlin 60 SS I have one and like it alot it was a 2yk purchase. Does the one that you are looking at have the blaze orange front sight? You really pick that up when shooting. I like the "high capacity" feature too! You can get high capacity magazines for the Ruger but the cost almost as much as the gun $60-100 I have seen the Shotgun news. Get the marlin and enjoy...........DAROGUE1

YES THE MARLIN MAY HOLD 15 RNDS BUT I BET YOU CAN SWITCH OUT CLIPS ON THE RUGER A HELL OF ALOT FASTER THAN LOADING UP THAT MARLIN.

the 10/22 is the better of the two as it has the stronger internal parts, is easier to repair if needed, damn near impossable to jam...I'm speaking from experience as I have owned a 10/22 for over 28 years and it has never failed or jammed, or broke. On the other hand I have a model 60 that has jammed numerous times with certain ammo and I have replaced the nylon buffer 4 times, the cartridge elevator twice and the magazine spring and follower 4 times. I quit useing it 5 years ago and just hang on to it because it was my first 22 that I purchased with my own money.

lol

yep,sounds like the 10/22 is a go. :D
sounds like the sebenza of .22s

but in reality ill wind up with both :)
hey, 2 pretty damn good guns for about 300 bucks, how can you lose?

"i have a M60 SS

Well Said.....

I have owned both. I prefer the tube fed Marlin. Yeah you can buy bigger mags for the Ruger, but Thanks to Bill Ruger, those Mags will cost you big $$$$$.

Marlin is a patriotic american company and deserves our support.

ive got a marlin mdl 60 and my cuz has a 10/22. i think the ruger was more expenisve and my marlin out shoots his 10/22 everyday. (with open sigts) the marlin is way easier to take apart then the 10/22. but the marlin is not nearly cusomisable. i have seen $1500 10/22's that look like Dragonavs. if u are wanting to customize ur rifel with a heavy barrel or new stock and what not go with the 10/22, but if u arent, and ur just looking to plink and varmit hunt, go with the Marlin. its got a big mag (17 under the barrel) and its lighter. thats my opinion. :p

I own both and can tell you this:

They both are super reliable but I personally feel that anything with a detatchable mag will cause problems at some point.

I also like the 15 round feature of the Marlin VS the Ruger

The Marlin barrel is superior to the Ruger and can be easily noticed at the range.

The 'right-out-of-the-box Marlin is alot more accurate beyond 50yards

The trigger group on the Ruger is better/smoother/lighter than the Marlin.

The Ruger has more after market goodies available

If I could only have one.......I would have to choose the Marlin 60 in SS.

I have both a marlin mod 60 and a ruger 10/22 in my safe. I too like tube magazines for 22 lr, those extra ruger 10 round mags are bulky items to carry around. Both are plenty accurate for plinking and small game hunting. My mod 60 is less ammo sensitive and groups better than my 10/22, but this certainly doesn't mean all mod 60s are more accurate than all 10/22s.

Single biggest advantage of the 10/22 is it's reliability, it just keeps on shooting. My mod 60 will begin jamming and double tapping if not completely disassembled and cleaned ever 200 - 300 rounds. No part failures yet, just very sensitive to firing residue.

As pointed out earlier, the scope on the marlin is probably junk. If it's one of the 3/4" 22 scopes you will be better off with iron sights. Pick the rifle you like and plan on purchasing a quality 1" scope and quality mounts in the future.

I sort of have both :)

Actually I've got the Marlin 25N and it is a nail driver. Hate that clip sticking out of the bottom though. I have no complaints with the Marlin.

My Dad has the 10/22 and loves it. Shoots good and has so many aftermarket parts that it can become a project gun into eternity.

I would probably get the Marlin because of the extra rounds and the ease of reloading the tube versus the Ruger mags. Yes you can carry several mags with you but then it gets bulky.

Anyone know if the Marlin will shoot shorts? They say LR only but tubular fed ought to be able to shoot shorts right?

sks

I have a 10/22, it is an ok rifle. Jams with some ammo, accuracy is middle of the road. Bill Ruger is not a friend to the gun industry.

I have shot a few Marlins, all have been nice little guns. I like the tube feed and its increased capacity, accuracy is generaly very good. Marlin is a quality American company that has not put a knife in the gun industries back.

I think the choice is clear. Marlin. Heck, instead of buying a Marlin and a Ruger, get a Marlin .22 mag. You will have more fun with that then the Ruger.

SKS,

No on the shorts. The carrier is designed for the over all length of a 22lr only. With shorts, or longs, the carrier will have one round plus a portion of the following round in it when it tries to lift from the mag to chamber position. Result is a jam, normally requiring disassembly to clear.

One could make a spacer for the carrier and set it up to shoot shorts only or longs only. I have modified a rossi pump for shorts, works well but requires time and disassembly to change over to lr.

Funny you should ask that regarding shooting shorts, sks.... I was going to mention the Marlin 81TS for that reason. It's basically a bolt version of the Model 60. I own both guns, and the 81TS seems to be at least as accurate if not more, and not nearly as sensitive to residue & buildup. As has been mentioned above, I find that after I shoot the better part of a brick of ammo with the Model 60 I start getting stoppages & misfeeds & such.

The 81TS is noticeably heavier though, & doesn't have that semi-auto "fun" factor. If you don't need to be able to spray lead, it's a viable candidate in the same price range. It's really forced me to work on the good habit of trying to make your first shot count.
