My introduction to firearms consisted of .22 rifle paper target shooting, followed by .410 single shot hunting of squirrels, rabbits, waterfowl, and pheasants. I also did a little center-fire rifle shooting with my dad and uncle - they reloaded for and sporterized WWII rifles. As an adult I began to hunt big game with a rifle and got hooked. I also began reloading, and, perhaps surprisingly, I've never shot an animal with a factory loaded centerfire cartridge. Although I carried a handgun, actually two handguns, in Vietnam, I didn't buy one until the mid 70's. I now have several handguns and carry. Nevertheless, I must admit I'm a hunting rifle guy first. Handguns are now a close second.

My TC Hawken 50 cal BP rifle. with its companion Kentucky pistol from Dizxie Gun works.

I built both from a Kit. They do not show the beauty of a professional job but I built them and they work.

Rifle

I like a rife that'll drop any threatening amimal in our 48 States with one good shot, at any self-defense or hunting distances, even if protected by thick gristle or armor.

If you're not starting the fight then pistols are for self-defense when no threat was expected at all, completely surprise.

Shotguns are for fowl or for CQB, perimeter defense.

I LOVE the rifle but I use my shotguns more than my rifles. Handguns are fun for me and they get a lot of use in practice for EDC but really aside from that there's no practical application for them in my life right now.

I used to be a pistol only kind of guy, but my recent transition to rifles has been more fun for me. So my vote is the long guns

Each type of firearm serves a different purpose, even same types of firearms are designed for different purposes.

There are a great variety of pistols and rifles and now a great variety of shotgtuns. They each are built for a specific purpose, depending on that purpose will depend on which type of firearm I'd consider my favorite.

If I had to rely just on one for all occasions, it'd probably be my SLR-95. I choose this one because I can do most anything with it aside from bird hunting.

Self-defense, plinking at the range, deer/hog hunting, hiking/camping trips, SHTF. It is not too large to be over-imposing, and compact enough to be slung across the back without getting in the way or being too heavy.

It is also simple, reliable, rugged and accurate enough for my purposes. It isn't the most glamorous or hi-tech, but it gets the job done, I could live the rest of my life with just this rifle and feel completely well-armed.

Old school lever action rifles. I dont care if it's my Marlin .30-30, my Henry .22, or my Daisy Red Ryder, if it is lever and wood I'm there.
( i did take my pistols to the range today)

I NEED not want to get out and shoot this 22 pistol. But...that's got me thinking of getting a 22 rifle too. Perhaps shooting pistol is currently my favorite as I have already shot shotguns and rifles a lot? So it's new-ish to me still.

Really looking at getting into IDPA shooting too.

12 ga pump

Versatility. As much as I enjoy all my guns and bows, the pump shotgun can be used for SHTF, home defense, hunting anything from doves to bear, relatively cheap to load and/or purchase ammo. If this were a "reason to own only one gun" poll I'd use the same answer.
