pistol hunters!

I'v taken 5 whitetail with my Taurus in 480 Ruger. Lots of stuff with 22lr & 22 mag handguns over the years. Hunted this year with a 45 LC but nothing got in front of it. Now that is Muzzy season I'm toteing a Hawkin 50cal. pistol with double sets. Will be back to the "Old Colt Clone" from Jan.1 to 15th. I love handgun hunting. Rifles are fun too but to easy on deer inside 450yds.

Thinking of getting a S&W 460 for hunting but what barrel length would be the best for whitetails out to 100 yards or so?
If you are really going to be shooting that far, you are going to have to use a scoped pistol (unless you are REALLY good). With a scoped pistol, the need for a long sighting plane kind of goes away and the barrel length becomes a function of how much velocity you can stand to loose going shorter and how much you care about recoil and muzzle blast.

With a 460, I would not want anyting less than a 6" barrel. Anything shorter would be too punishing and probably wouldn't balance right. I also wouldn't want anything more than 8+". After that lenght, they just get too uncomfortable to carry.
Well 100 yards would be absolute max for me. Most would be 25-50 yds. So between 6-8" but S&W website only shows 5" or 8 3/4" both outside your parameters?

This buck was taken with my Taurus .44 mag just a few days ago during NY's deer season at 2 yards (!) from my ground blind. I thought it was a large doe, but was actually an older buck with scars on his head, and his teeth worn down to almost nothing.

The load is MagTech 240 JSP, 10.9gr of Unique. This load was also used to kill my biggest buck ever (50 yard shot). Will post pics when I can find them. (added below)

This was my 2004 8 pointer from Eden, NY.

Handgun hunting

I've killed deer with - -
.45 Colt in Ruger BKH 7.5" and Colt SA 4.75"
.45 ACP in a National Match 5"
.45 Auto Rim in an S&W 1955 Target 6.5"
.357 in a Colt Three-Fifty-Seven 4"

Small game and vamints with the above, plus .38 revolvers, 9mm autos, and both in .22 LR.

I've never hunted with glass on a handgun. My range limit on game animals is 40 yards.

My hunting handgun is a Taurus Raging Bull in .454 Casull and my edc is a Glock-29 in 10mm auto. I believe i have taken more hogs with the Glock than with the Casull. Nice job on the deer there BirdDog.

It is actually 8 3/8", which I think he meant to include in the "8+".

Yep. I couldn't remember the fractional length. I knew it was just over 8". I've got a .44mag S&W with a 5" barrel and the muzzle blast from that is all I'd ever want to handle. With a .460, I'd want a longer barrel than 5".

No kill records

Carried a TC CONTENDER a super 14 in 44mag . Was hunting in the fog .Walking out on loging trail when a hunter came out and asked me if someone stole the other half of my gun. He never seen a TC before this was back in the mid 1970'S.:D

Hunted with contenders in various calibers .22lr 357 .mag,44mag . & 222rem with caliber incerts for 22lr & 22mag .The 222 rem was my favorite woods pistol.

This year I didn't get one with my pistol.

But I've gotten 4 does over 3 years before and a decent buck last year.

Gun of choice: S&W .41 Mag with 6.5" barrel. Open sights. And man it's nice. Punches a paper-plate sized group at amazing ranges. Every bit the gun it was designed to be.

Had a good rest and dropped my buck at 90 yards. Wouldn't have tried it if I hadn't had a rifle as well, or alot of open ground around.

If I can get REALLY close and have a PERFECT shot, I'll use my Sig .40 S&W with XTP's next year. I had a 15 yard broadside shot this year but I didn't want to use my buck tag on a Spike.

Have dropped several whitetails with my Blackhawk .357 (6.5" barrel). Limit shots to just a bit past bowhunting range and all have fallen quickly if not DRT. I prefer using 180 grain hardcast from either Buff Bore or my handloads.

I've killed antelope, elk and deer with a number of different styles and calibers of handguns as well as a plethora of small game and varmints.
My most recent is this little mulie with my G20 at 112 yards....

The 10mm will do it's part.

I have killed a few deer with a Colt Match Ten, and the gun and round worked great.
I routinely shoot them with either "It's too small for deer, and irresponsible" .223, or with whatever carry piece I have at the time.
.357MAG, .44 Special, .45ACP. Whatever. Take good shots, know your limits, and you'll be fine.
