Pistol caliber carbine.

I know you said you don't really want an AR.... but that really is one of the best options. Especially if you have something custom built by Ron Williams. He can make you a DI gun in the caliber of your choice. Using the mags of your choice. In my case, I had him make me a 9" upper in .357 SIG. Mounted it on a LW lower that uses Glock 31 mags. So I can use 15 round mags or 15 with a +2 or the new Glock .40 mags that hold 22 rounds. Stuck a +2 on the bottom to get up to 24. Put one in the chamber and that's 25 rounds of .357 SIG without a reload. Doesn't stick way out like a single stack sub gun mag either. And .357 SIG is really blasting along when it gets a 9 inch barrel. Great gun. Didn't end up cheap after all my custom additions but that's true of any AR I buy!

Do any of you have any experience with the MechTech uppers for the Glock? That might be a viable option. Of course reliability is my number 1 priority.

I am pretty impressed with how cheap the Mech Tech is. I asked about them on Glock talk but didn't really get any responses from people who had owned them for any significant length pf time or put a lot of rounds through them.

I am not impressed with the Uzi. I don't think anyone is anymore. Even the anti-gunners stopped using the term

IMO - It's an old design, the sights sucks, not particularly accurate when compared to the Ruger, or HK or others, there is no picatinny rail system for them. There's just a lot of better options IMO.

Yeah, I guess my big reason for an Uzi would be because it's different and historic. I'm sure it would be fun to shoot, and the pride of ownership would be there. But as far as doing it's job well, there are other options that would make more sense.
I dont feel like I'd have much pride in owning a "MechTech upper" lol, but if it worked well, I'm sure I'd grow very fond of it. I just hate the idea of having a perfectly good Glock slide laying around while the MechTech is in operation. Maybe if I can hear from some people who have experience with them I'll be more interested.
Out of all the pistol caliber carbines out there, the ones that load the mag in the pistol grip of the gun are the most interesting to me. I like that it cuts down on the total length of the gun.

i have a semi uzi in 9mm.
it is a blast. the best way i have found to go through a bunch of 9mm in a short time.
the sights might suck(which i dont think they do), but it will cut the center out of a target at 50 yards with no effort.
