Picking Up My First Hand Gun Today:

This might not interest most but I am a little excited today. I am picking up my first hand gun today. It's nothing special, Smith & Wesson 22a LR. The price was right for my first and something for my wife and I to practice with and get use to and affordable. Once I can figure out what I want to do in a few weeks and make up my mind of two different guns. Which is the Ruger sp101 3" barrel 357 or the Glock 19. I am now shying toward the Glock 19. I know I sound like a kid at Christmas but it took 30 years to convince my wife into this and she really wants to learn also. I took the course and now she wants to also. BINGO better late then never.

Welcome to the world of shooting,,,

You chose a very nice handgun for your trainer/plinker,,,
But beware, because you've put the needle into your arms,,,
Owning one handgun leads to another, and another, and so forth.

Have fun and stay safe.

I'm an addict.

I bought my first gun about a month ago, a Walther P22 and yesterday I ordered a Taurus PT 140 till beretta comes out with the 40 cal version of the PX4 compact. Then it will be gun number 3. :D

I got a monkey on my back and it's armed.

Congrats, I'm planning on purchasing my first handgun this weekend! The anticipation alone is exciting for me, so I know picking up your first must be even more exciting! Thanks for sharing.

It's nothing special

Nothing special!?! It's your first handgun! One should always be excited and make as much of a big deal out of it as they want. LOL. Congratulations. You'll probably always remember that moment when you pick it up for the first time, and IMO I don't think I'll ever get rid of the first handgun I bought. :D

I have owned two walther p22 and really enjoyed them both as it was my first handgun but I then switched to a ruger mark 3 and will never look back accuracy of the walther is nice but it doesn't hold a candle to the ruger...just food for thought...on the walther u can have the cool little laser on the bottom which is also fun for shooting...unless you are experienced in machining..and with the proper tools could u achieve that ( unless you use a tactical solution package )

Welcome to the wonderful world of gun collection. The 22 is great to start out with for training and fun. You'll go through a few before you settle on a CCW weapon. Then you start to get into the " I want" then the " I got to have". Is this a great country or what. Have fun and watch that credit card. ;)

I always find myself there! I bet you do too then....Come to think of it, all of us on this forum are probably still there.

Yes, I love this country. God bless it. We'll always fight for it.

to Chad

It came with the laser. I got it used.........but the laser is useless in the day light. but it sured does make the dog run around the house
(off the gun of course)

Good choice for the first gun, your wife will probably adopt from you when she starts shooting. Ease her into it with a rimfire and then she can get comfotable and graduate to a larger caliber. I take a rimfire hand gun with me every time I go to the range.

Smith & Wesson 22a LR

Oldman, I have the same exact gun. The .22 is a great gun for the
range. You can shoot all day for not a lot of money.

Glock 19 is a 9mm which is cheap for the range, but you got the .22
for cheap range time :)

I would go for the Ruger sp101. You can shoot .38 specials out of
it and they are priced just a little above 9mm ammo...but

You can also shoot .357's and they make some great defensive ammo
that gets some velocity even out of the 3 inch barrel. The revolver
just has more options. No magazine springs etc.. put it in the drawer
for 20 years and it will still work :D 6 for sure :D

IMhO one of the neat things you can do now is join a club at a local range and do some competition shooting. Gives you a reason to go to the range on a regular bases, REALLY pushes you to become a better shot, lets you talk to other shooters and try their equipment and gain knowledge and confidence about shooting.

A NICE club or league is great. I've belonged to a couple. I've also encountered a couple where the jerks rule. Don't be put off by those, I think if you look you might be able to find a good one.

Very good first gun and you're way ahead of the game taking lessons. Keep up the good work.

Take your time getting that second gun. Rent some guns at ranges and fondle the ones you can't rent at gun shops.

Nothing wrong with either the Glock 19 or the Ruger SP101. Both should be available to rent at the average shooting range.

My own preference is for heavy longer barreled guns. My choice for a first center fire revolver would be a S&W K or N frame with a 6" barrel. A Model 10 for example. There are too many semis to pick just one as a best first choice. Definitely full sized and steel. A Browning Hi Power or a CZ 75 would fit my bill.
I also prefer single action semis.

To outforit

..lol.. yes I had 2 cats that just loved that thing...and mine was the same way and I purchased it brand new...gun and laser both...and I still couldn't hardly see it during the middle of the day...evening was ok...night was great...but oh well...when I was shooting alot of rimfire 22...you could pick up a box of 550 federal or remington for 10 bucks...now its almost 20 :(...still fun tho

Congrats, and a belated welcome to TFL. Whichever gun you pick for your first, NEVER, EVER sell it. I've traded and sold my share of guns [almost always regretted it later], but I still have my very first, bought back in the mid-1980s. Not surprisingly...it's a Single Six. :D

OLd-Man,
Please give your wife our sincerest condolences. You have acquired a syndrome known as Hoplophilia, for which there is no known cure. Symptoms include: (1) an intense desire to examine any item which flings projectiles at high speeds; (2) an odor of burnt gunpowder lingering about one's person; (3) occasional jerky, erratic movements known as the Hot Brass Dance. This last symptom is ordinarily seen only in the Hoplophiliac's home environment (the gun range), and occurs when one Hoplophiliac discharges a semiautomatic pistol, and the ejected case lands in the collar of the Hoplophiliac immediately to his right, and promptly slides down into his shirt. There is no known cure for Hoplophilia, and the CDC has reported that the number of cases is growing in the United States. ;)

Seriously, though, congratulations!

Old-,welcome you have chosen an excellent handgun to began with. If you are like most of us it will be the first of many.

Spats McGee: By no means am I trying to be a smarty pants here [I hate those types], but I thought Hoplophobia was the term coined by Jeff Cooper to describe the irrational fear of weapons [?].
