"Perfect" Military Handgun

What does the M-16/M-14/G-3/FAL or what ever have to do with the "Perfect" military hand gun question?

The average soldier doesn't need a hand gun but a lot of them seem to turn up in BDU pockets when they go in harms way. I am not talking about issue pistols either but whatever they have been able to find/buy/have shipped from home/steal/or what ever. Would they be better served by more rifle ammo? Maybe, but if a doggie's confidence improves because he has a pistol let him improve his confidence.

HooaH.

Just remember it was the Air Force and McNamarra that jammed the M-16 down our throats. Even Gene Stoner thought it was the wrong rifle and HE designed it.

Turk, you wrote that in combat, the 1911 made a good chow weapon? Did you have to shoot something for chow, or just use it to fight off the other hungry troops? :) Thanks for your tour, glad you made it back.

The perfect GI pistol is one subject, training to use it is another. Out troops, all of them, not just the elite, should be trained to be safe and effective with all the individual weapons. The officers need to be able to throw grenades and everyone needs to be able to use a pistol at reasonable ranges. If there are UD's (unplanned discharges,I just made that term up)it is a training and discipline problem.

Bart,

Had a good laugh at your post. Maybe we get too serious here on the forum.

No I didn't have to shoot my chow. Every three days a hot meal was flown to the company. When you left your fox hole area to get the chow you had to take your weapon with you. I was carrying a 60 and a 45 was a lot easier to get the chow.

That's a Chow gun.
