Parents upset about shell casings brought to class

Jeff Thomas et al,
this is an interesting discussion. I think there's a difference in "gun cultures" between Finland and USA. We've had compulsory registration laws since the 30's and you go through a background check every time you want to buy a gun. CCW licences aren't generally available to civilians.

This may seem unreasonably harsh for Americans but it has its positive effects:
shooters are known to be law-abiding folks and are not harassed in the media whenever a madman steals a gun and shoots someone.
Of course there are people who'd like to see all guns banned but they're a small minority,I don't see anything like the 1.000.000 Mom March happening here.
Also, most men serve in the military forces and are taught shooting and use of guns, therefore they don't develop irrational fear of guns and recognize an empty metal case for what it is: an empty tube which is harmless in itself.

Mike and Matt,
I have to say that I've never heard of an 8-year-old who had access to guns and live ammo, I don't think guns should be playthings or that young children should have access to them without supervision. I'd have to agree with Matt in that a gun is a gun and an empty case is an empty case and they are worlds apart in their potential danger level.

Timo

My high schools' (I attended two as a military brat in the 80s)science fairs where allways filled with guys doing studies on "pellet spread, distance, and aerodynamics." A friend of mine actually received a merit award for the work he put into one of them. Times are a changin'.

Sorry, Timo, but that's exactly the opposite of reality in the US. Here, every single time some fruitloop decides to Darwinate himself and take a few dozen along, the regular folks who own guns are crucified in the media. *Every* *single* *time*.

Interesting hypothesis, Coineach.

In fact it's not really a hypothesis at all, but the truth.

Compare apples to apples here.

We, as a gun owning group are being systematically targeted, and harassed.

For example, if I were to write an article that implied, or even stated outright that all Mexicans were lazy good for nothing so ans os's I'd most certainly be tagged a you know what, and start a flame bigger than the governments agents in Los Alamos.

Or if I were to state that all Blacks were this, or that. Then I'd again be a you know what, and start the biggest flame war since Waco.

Point being, we're being generalized and catagorized as something less than honorable every time someone decides to use a specific item to commit suiceide. And every time someone decides to vent their limited imagination against the very segment that they either fear or hate, we're to blame because they decide to use a specific tool to perform the job of destruction of their hatred, or fear.

As Hitler aligned public hatred against the Jews, we're being targeted with the same intent in mind. We're being characterized as a hazard to the safety of the comminuty, or nation. Example after example is being presented to the public, with media support I might add, that the 2nd Amendment is the cause of us, and were the reason there's so much hatred being presented in our society.
Exactly as Hitler did with the Jews.

The Nazi's were responsible for the burning of the ReichStag to prove the dangers of terrorism by the Jews. His point was proven, and favorable laws were enacted to follow in line with that.

This escalation of the perception that firearms, or ammunition, is harmful to the peace of America is along a very close parallel of the Nazi seizure of control during the above described period.

Best Regards,
Don

The most foolish mistake we could make would be to allow the subjected people to carry arms; history shows that all conquerers who have allowed their subjected people to carry arms have prepared their own fall.
