Jeff Thomas et al,
this is an interesting discussion. I think there's a difference in "gun cultures" between Finland and USA. We've had compulsory registration laws since the 30's and you go through a background check every time you want to buy a gun. CCW licences aren't generally available to civilians.
This may seem unreasonably harsh for Americans but it has its positive effects:
shooters are known to be law-abiding folks and are not harassed in the media whenever a madman steals a gun and shoots someone.
Of course there are people who'd like to see all guns banned but they're a small minority,I don't see anything like the 1.000.000 Mom March happening here.
Also, most men serve in the military forces and are taught shooting and use of guns, therefore they don't develop irrational fear of guns and recognize an empty metal case for what it is: an empty tube which is harmless in itself.
Mike and Matt,
I have to say that I've never heard of an 8-year-old who had access to guns and live ammo, I don't think guns should be playthings or that young children should have access to them without supervision. I'd have to agree with Matt in that a gun is a gun and an empty case is an empty case and they are worlds apart in their potential danger level.
