A well-respected firearms author named Walt Kuleck and a gunsmith friend of his named Drake Oldham conducted a series of drop tests with a complete 1911 pistol (not just a slide and barrel) and they found that they could get drop fires from heights as low as three feet. The results of their tests were enough to convince a number of 1911 people (myself included) to shift to using only Series 80 pistols for carry.

Walt wrote up his tests on the M1911.org forum a couple or three years ago. The testing was extensive and conclusive.
I have never dropped a gun on its muzzle in my entire life...no one I know has. In theory, a 1911 could fire if dropped, but then cows could poop on people if they could fly. The danger of a Series 70 style 1911 is mostly a matter of "what if", and no data shows shootings/injuries resulting from accidental droppings.

I just purchased a ria 1911 10mm for my new CC and I am loving it. I switched from a glock so there was some struggles with the size but other than that I would go with ria.

Note to self: Don't drop it. Check.
I haven't had extensive experience with guns, but I'm pretty sure I've never dropped one at all, let alone on it's face. Just be careful. I don't know if I would let that influence my decision one way or the other. From what I've heard, the 80 series has issues with the trigger, like the Remington R1 I was considering.

I had a holster break while in a Academy Sports, my fully loaded and striker armed Glock23, hit the hard wood floor, with a bunch on men woman and children there. It just bounced and slid across the floor. People just stared at it and went along with their shopping.
I quickly picked it up and started to leave the area, when one guy just asked is that a .40? I just said yes and moved on.

I also had this same loaded Glock23, slip from it's holster in the street in front of my home, it hit the street bounced and happly did not fire.
