P228

YES!

Well I took the plunge and bought a NIB P228 for $ 510 today. Actually it was purchased by proxy. My Dad got it for me and I won't see it for a couple of weeks.

It is a PC version with the 10 round magazine. Any ideas on where to get some 13 rounders? Are there any after market ones that are good or should I stay with the original SIG mags?

Thanks to all for the informative posts. Will let you know how it performs soon. :D

I have seen the 13 round factory magazines for sale here and at GlockTalk. You may also find some on auctionarms and others.

The P228 is one hell of a gun, and is one I hope to include into my Sig family someday. As all the points everyone has made, it has some advantages over the P226. More economical and practical while being very accurate as the P226. Great gun!

Well I thought that I had a 13 round factory mag for my new P228 this weekend. It was in the $19.95 box at a gun show. But when I went to pay for it the seller politely showed me the real price tag of $89.90! No way!

Anybody have any P228 mags for sale?

thanks,

Uhhh.......YES way! Thats about the going rate right now for P228 mags. the MecGars are going for around $75 right now. A 20 round Sig SWAT mag is going for about $120. If you think that the 3 extra rounds are not worth the added expense, well, there is a cheap, reliable method to make the 13 rounders into 15 round magazines. email me and i'll let you know more about it.

{edit} just wanted to throw in my latest best-buy. A month ago or so I was in one of those old, dark, musty gun shops that is off the beaten path. I was digging thru one of their bargain/unsorted crap boxes, and came across a factory Sig P228 13 round magazine, with what looked like a yellowed, 10 year old price sticker.....$25..... And a NFML Glock 19 15 round magazine for ....$20....the guy who ran the place looked at the price stickers and said that he shoulda done a better job sorting out that box, and if thats what the sticker says, then thats the price. :D $150 in magazines for $45, life was GOOD.

Just after i bought my NIW 13 rd mag for $85, I was directed to some on the auction boards for $60 or so. This was earlier this year. Still worth it for me, though, for principle if nothing else.

The 228's slide is formed from sheet rather than machined from SS like the 239 & 229, and consequently, it is a bit lighter and less top-heavy. I find the balance to be near perfect for me, Though I find myself carrying my 239 more because it is more concealable. I admit to owning 5 SIGs, so I may be a little biased.:)

FWIW, 226 mags fit the 228 just fine if you don't mind it sticking out about 1/4"

For hi-cap replacement, I've had good luck with the other similar wide body mags by Promag. The fit and finish really looked good and it functioned well. You also see TripleK mags out there for the Sigs, but I've never seen one.

Mecgar is factory quality, they supply some manufactorers.

Congrats on buying a P228! IMHO it's the best of all SIGs. Reliable, accurate, well balanced, and amazingly comfortable, at least in my hand. Hi-cap mags would be good to have for it. But since they hold only three rounds more than the politically correct mags, I personally don't feel a strong need for them at the prices they're going for nowadays.

Not meaning to toss another variable on the table SKS but here's something else to ponder... the pre-ban 15 round 226 mags work fine in the 228, they just hang .5-.75" below the grip frame. Stuff a flush fit mag in the pistol for carry and put the 226 mags in your mag pouch. Lot of firepower in a very carryable package.

Good choice on the 228. The 229 is equally nice, a little more substantial IMO, more punch as well, but hey you can't go wrong with any Sig product (well maybe the 210 is overpriced  )

Thanks for the input guys. I read on the SIG FAQ page that the 226 mags work in the 228 and that the .40/.357 sig mags for the 226 will also work in the 228. I saw a couple of 15 round 226 mags at the gun show for a reasonable price but did not know that they were interchangeable. For just shooting I don't mind the extra length mag and it would be fine with me as suggested to carry the longer mag in a mag pouch.

thanks for all of the info.

I'm telling you...there is a way to make flush-fit all Sig factory 15 round magazines, out of the 13 rounders. But i'm sworn to only release the info thru email. It costs under $15 dollars too, with parts straight from Sig.
