Overheating issues

Well, I'll bet that if we stuck a bore scope in there and looked around, the throat area would look like a roadkill alligator...

Heck, if you wanna spray & pray, use something like an AK... You're not gonna get meaningful accuracy out of it anyway... Why take a perfectly good rifle, capable of sub-MOA accuracy out to a great distance, and turn it into a tomato stake?

Key difference here.........

From the M60's, and standard m1A's..........
If, (as stated), it is a natl match package rifle, it has a CM barrel, or SS barrel.....NOT chrome lined............
You might get away with this unharn=med with a CL bore....but take it to heart, you have definitely shortened the life of this barrel........But, HEY!!!!!!!!!!......you paid for it!!!!!

George, you can say that as many times as you like, but I still think that barrel has suffered significant damage, and probably isn't worth a hoot any more, accuracy wise.

Amazing. Even when the taxpayers were payin for my weapons I wouldn't do that unless forced to by circumstances.

Now I can't even begin to afford to treat a weapon like that.

Sam.....M60 be cool, not havin to use one even cooler.

Accuracy? Double shot, same hole at 25 yards from a rice patty squat. :-) No, no accuracy damage, but from the freakout of responses, I won't do that again...

Well, I also got the dental instruments out (Don't you have dental instruments??) and took a look at the feed lip, the (I have no idea what that area is called) but the "seat" where the bullet sits, and it's smooth. No problems. There is still some copper gunk that I can't get out, which means time for me to get a new toothbrush, but no, no problems that are visable.

The problem likely ain't with the feed ramp or that area - it's up just past the chamber...

How have you cleaned it thus far? Gitcherself a jar of Sweet's and a jar of Butch's bore shine, and see how blue the patches are...

No, the gas cylinder came that way from the factory... I never noticed it before someone commented on it because when I put the gun down, I always put it breech side up, and so the left side I almost never see...

The gun I do rapid fire VERY often, is my SKS. it shoots minute of Moose, maybe... So you want to talk about a ruined barrel, that one has a ruined barrel, but I could care less about my SKS...

As far as same hole @ 100 or 200 yards, I couldn't do that period, so probably a bad indication of barrel condition.

I've been using a Bore snake and qtips. I'll give her another cleaning tonight just to see..

Of course, as this thread gets longer, I'm more and more paranoid..

There's a whole lotta probablies and maybes here.

M-60 barrels can be swapped, George said that.

My wife's first cousin was on 50cal in the army, and he said he'd shoot that momma until the barrel wriggled around like a snake. On ammo change, his barrel man would swap out barrels in a 3-barrel rotation. That would give the barrels approximately 8-10 minutes to cool before the next bout. He claimed accuracy was never affected.

Those sticky shells are a fouling problem, not a heat problem. When 2100 rounds are run through a gun, it's way past the cleaning schedule.

So, how about this? Twoblink - take that thing back to the range and prove somebody here wrong or right on the accuracy thing. No sense in us giving a newbie somewhere out there some advice on a "maybe", thus causing him to "maybe" throw out a perfectly good barrel.

What solvent do you use?

If you do not use a copper-clearing solvent, you'll be brushing pennies outta your barrel for a while...

What solvant should I be using? You all got me so confused...

The problem of course is, when I'm out at the range, that prove nothing if my barrel is really bad. Why? Because I'm not that great of a shooter, and so if the bullet misses, is it me or the barrel? Now if I'm at the range and there's someone else there with an M1A, and I can hit with his/hers and I can't hit with mine, then I will know, but without a side by side test, how would I know??

Albert

I feel for ya, bub. I know that sometimes I can't hit the broadside of a barn.

When I sight my guns in, I always bring a friend or two. With all of us shooting it, the user-error is, kinda, eliminated. It also helps me get rid of my left-handed shooting habits.

Although, I have the advantage of having one particular friend of mine that can't miss. Scary part is, he's an inner-city college boy. He just has the skill natural.

BTW - As for a solvent to use, just browse the gun-cleaning isle. Yoiu'll see all kinds of cleaners that will get rid of copper and lead fouling. Buy more than one brand to start with, so you can find your favorite.
I've found that these spray-cans the cleaning supply companies haver come out with are good for lubes, but not worth a damn for proper cleaning.
It's always a good idea to shop for cleaning supplies locally. That way, if you run out, you're gun won't have to suffer while you wait for mail-order.

twoblink, come to the next Las Vegas shoot that you can and bring your baby (M1A). I'm only a fair shot but if you want I'll try my best to get a tight group for you with your rifle at 100 yards. If we need to, I have a loaded M1A that we can use in a comparision test.
