Outrage over CA gun law

Hey guys, I'm picking up a CA legal AR15 this weekend and I found out that:

I have to have a gun lock (already knew that, already have half-dozen unused ones sitting in my closet, planned on bringing one of those)BUT THAT IT HAS TO HAVE BEEN PURCHASED WITHIN THE LAST 30 DAYS; as in you have to bring the lock and a record of the purchase!!!!! So not only do I have to have a lock, but I have to purchase another lock, which won't ever get used, to be able to take possession of the rifle.

part of me says that big deal the lock is $10, and is miniscule compared to the cost of the rifle; but most of me says its stupid and its a matter of principle. But I'm willing to tuck my tail between my legs to get that gun.

Is it this bad anywhere else??

Not to change the subject or anything, but since this is about laws in california, what is the law for transporting a long gun in your car to go to a range or field? If it's in the trunk it's concealed and illegal? So you just put the gun case in the back seat or have the gun out of the case in the back and have it visible? Where does the ammo have to go? Thanks.

Generally, CA law is vague on that, but Penal Code (can't remember the number) says that a handgun must be unloaded and in a locked container (trunk counts) and that a rifle must be unloaded; but does not have to be in a locked container.

That's as much as I've gathered.

Buy it, present it with receipt, then return it after you get your legalities taken care of

Better yet, buy it at the same time as the rifle, take the rifle home and return the lock for a refund. If they ask why you're returning it tell them you already more than one person can reasonably use:D

Long guns and sidearms must be in a closed box with a CABLE lock attached sitting in the trunk. Trigger locks have been deemed ineffective.

Ammo must be stored separately in the glove compartment or under the passenger seat. No loaded magazines allowed anywhere. :(

Is this law brand new?

I remember the last time I read "How to own a gun & stay out of jail - CA edition", that having a pistol in a locked container that was in the trunk was fine. Did they recently add the cable lock provision too? Ammo had to be in the passenger compartment and also in a locked container. I guess I'm going to have to get the latest edition of this book--mine might be out of date.

I can only imaging what these idiot politicans will draft next, for example one might have to disasemble a pistol, and put each sub-part in its own locked container with two padlocks on each container. :barf:

in northern cali it goes county to county. i dont think the gun has to be locked but ammo has to be in a seperate part of the car (glove box trunk ect) unless its during hunting season then it can be out in the open. up here its a big conflict of interest because vehicle code says one thing hunting code says another. chico (one of the most liberal citys in cali) tryed to pass a law making it illeagal to transport firarms in city limits, it didn't pass, so they made it illeagal to transport them in a gun rack.but this is also coming from the same city that passed a law that says "it is unlawfull to detonate ANY nuclear device within city limits" i'm sure alot of guys want to.

Isn't there some number at DOJ that you can call to find out what the law is? They've got a lot of info here http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/index.html and I'm sure if you poke around there long enough you can find a number to call. From what I've read of what has gone on there, it's not a place I'd want to "test" the legality of doing something with a firearm.

Ooohhh...
...also coming from the same city that passed a law that says "it is unlawfull to detonate ANY nuclear device within city limits...
Now THERE's a useful bit of legislation!

Can I transport my nuke as long as I have a cable lock? Oh yea, and exactly who did they think was going to prosecute that one after detonation?

Back to the AR15 -- do you have a CADOJ gun safe/cabinet? If so, you can use the receipt as proof that you are able to lock the gun away from unauthorized users. The FFL guys will make a copy of it. If you don't have the receipt, you can sign an affadavit stating that you have X Brand safe and it meets a list of DOJ requirements on the affadavit.

+1 on the safe affidavit.

Spend $100 for one of the Stack-on DOJ-approved gun cabinets. It can protect your new AR from meth-heads who would steal it when you're not home.

Better Safe Then Sorry

Here in California it is better to error on the side of caution. I case, lock, and trunk any firearm I am transporting. This is wether I am going to the range or the woods. It might be more then legally required, but this is California.

I also wonder how the law applies to small SUV type veichles that do not have a trunk? If you store your guns all the way in the back, it is still the same compartment as the passengers.

Made A Phone Call

I just made a phone call to the firearms division of our Department of Justice. They said that the ammo must be in a locked container too. In a small SUV, as long as the gun is all the way in the back and the ammo up front, it is fine.

Like I said, here in California there is no such thing as being overly concerned about firearm transportation.

Hi guys. First post for me. I just picked up my first handgun and all I had to do was show him I had a cable lock. (Which by the way I got for free from my local pd). To completely show my newbie ignorance, can someone give me the scoop on my situation while driving my truck? I dont have a campershell, slider window, I do have a locked gun case but your telling me I have to lock my ammo also and keep it in the truck bed?
