"Other House" gun - AK or FAL?

If those were Hesse AKs, I'd not be a bit surprised.

The only AK failure I've experienced in my MAK90 and Romanian AKs is a dented primer/no ignition. Again, this is in some thousands of rounds (at $140/k, it's easy to lose track).

AK's jam, anything mechanical will go astray. On the .223's the only real problem is the firing pin springs. Sometimes the pin sticks and the .223 Ak's will double. Easy to fix, place a stronger spring. The only other jams I've seen people succede in inflicting on the AK's is when the mag isn't rocked properly into place. If the angle is reversed-the cover and bolt have to come out to unstick it. (Yeah, can't idiot proof everything)

No jams with my AK

I've gone through a thousand rounds or so with fast fire, aimed fire, bench fire.
With cheap chinese stuff, good federal stuff, hungarian, russian, and whatever.
No problems.

But for a few hundred yards and serious terminal impact, I'd rather have a .308
or at least an AK or AR or Galil or SIG built around a .243

How about the SVD?. Good terminal ballistics, reliable. However not .308. And getting expensive or hard to find. Would seem to be a way to get essentially AK type reliability, somewhat better accuracy than the FAL. Sort of a mix of the two's strong points (excepting only a 10 rd mag) Doubt it could be converted to a rimless round.

I'd shy away from an SVD. Those things are el mucho dinero, and not that spectacular. ~$1800 for a real Russian one. If you've got that kind of money, there are much better ways to dispose of it.
