I am a college teacher.
Occasionally students I have praised for genuine accomplishment will stay after class and ask "Did you really mean that?" They explain that they have been praised so often for nothing in high school that they think it's all a joke, and they don't believe me when I praise them. (I only tell them they've done a good job when they really have.)
It's a mistake to think anything but the very stupidest kids are fooled by self-esteem practices.
