options for 30 remington brass

To be clear I am speaking to the old 30 remington cartridge from 1906.
A friend has a rifle passed down to him by his grandfather chambered in 30 remington. If you can find factory ammo for it you would be asked to pay over $2/round. Anyone have a reasonably affordable procedure for making brass for this chambering? I've heard of people turning down the rimmed case head of 30-30 brass and cutting in an extractor groove. Surely this is time consuming, not to mention I don't have a lathe. If not the rifle can continue to gather dust I guess, just seeing if someone had a better option.

I think you have covered the situation accurately.
.30 Remington is just one of those rounds that did not stay interesting enough.
The other Remington rimless rounds, other than .35, are even worse.

Try looking at the Redding web sight and their on line catalog under dies or custom Dies. I believe they can help you.

Keep an eye out @ Grafs. They are the most likely place for new brass to show up.

Edit to add: Lohman Arms may have some Jamison brass in stock.

The rimmed case head of .30-30 can't be turned into a rimless case. The Remington is 10 thou longer too.
Grafs is listing their own brand of brass in .30 Remington. Currently out of stock, of course. $49.99 per 50.
Buffalo Arms is listing their ammo as a Temporarily Unavailable - Back-Orders OK. However, they want $40.50 per 20 for one box. $38.88 per box when you buy 5 boxes. Dies are pretty reasonable from them, but no brass is listed. Although they do list .30 Remington as 'Discontinued by Remington' and give a price. Call 'em and ask.
Try these guys too. http://shop.reedsammo.com/main.sc
Collector ammo runs a lot more than $2 a shot. There's 9 rounds in an original Winchester box currently on Gunbroker the guy thinks is worth $80. No bids in 3 days.

I'd just like to say that getting brass at two per round beats the absolute poop out of making your own, no matter what. Fifty bucks may sound like a lot, but getting the thing back into work is worth it.

Loaded ammo or brass.

Ammo at $55 per 2brass for $115 for 100

Maybe this helps, it will be a lot cheaper than buying equipment to make it.

Thank you for the link to reedsammo, I had not come across that before. He might just get loaded ammo instead of trying to assemble everything. Finding it otherwise is not likely. I believe he was more interested in just having some ammo and not necessarily volume shooting.

Yes you can make rimless out of rimmed. I used .303 British brass to make 6.5 Arisaka for years. Made it on a lathe. I don't know for sure, but isn't the 6.8 SPC case based on the .30 Remington? Maybe something you could do there.

I would like to say that the .35 Remington could be converted to .30 but the case rim is excessive. About the only other caliber with the same case rim diameter is the 6.8 rem spc but that case is too short.

I really hope that the link is helpful. It's almost certain that someone else will have it if this guy can actually provide it. If I have the time tonight I'll try to find others.

I visited a friend today, and he found an recent article there is a fellow in Texas who will convert 30-30 to .30Rem for $1 a case, plus shipping. You send him the brass, he turns it on a lathe, and sends it back

There is also an outfit in CN that will make any case you want, but they are described as "spendy" (so more than $1 each, at least).

If you want the details, let me know.

"The rimmed case head of .30-30 can't be turned into a rimless case."

Yes, they can.

Yes, the cases are a little short, but they still work.

There was a guy selling 30-30 cases that he turned into 30 rem a few months back on gun broker. You can use 30-30 dies to reload 30 rem Lee has 30 rem shell holders too, just have to call and ask at least they had some 6 months or so ago

There is a fellow on the Cast Boolits Form that goes by the name Grumpa who makes custom reasonably priced discontinued brass. You might want to contact him to see if he has any 30 Remington or 32 Remington for sale. Of all those who buy his brass on that web site. Not once have I ever read any complaints about Grumpa's products.

A note about rimmed to rimless: It works, but depending what you are using, I would split the case the long way and make sure the head area is pretty close internally. Other than that it works fine. You may have to cut the rim deeper.

Made contact with him before I posted, then told him that retooled 30-30 was being considered when he messaged back again, and he now is saying that he's ready to deal.

I would personally rather have factory new cases in box than retooled, and to me, the issue would be what eventual costs would be.
